Yes, I found it excellent with photos which I then incorporate into powerpoint presentations. It enables you to scan and adjust photos, cut them down, straighten them etc.

Mine just buzzes on startup and if you try and scan it says 'scanner hardware problem'. guess i was just unlucky and got a dud?

Sounds like "dead on arrival". I had a similar DOA delivery and returned the faulty scanner. I am happy with the repurchased (functioning) scanner.

I want to be able scan 50 sheets and name each one 001 to 050. Will this product do this or do I have to key in a new file name for each page

You can choose whether to save as one file or separate files comprlsed of a specified number of pages. I guess that saving as 1 page would produce a set of 50 separate files with different names. Don't have time to try this, but I guess they'd be sequential.

Does this scan receipts and business cards etc from the auto document feeder or do you have to use the flatbed?

You will need to use the flatbed. That way, your cards can be blown up to a larger size or you can scan several cards on one sheet. I have never tried the ADF with a card, but the card may be too thick to go through the ADF.
