Why is this twice the cost of the sand baseplate?

The Sand Baseplate is 10x10, the Grey is 15x15 which reflects the price!

Will a 10x10 Lego plate attach to the top of this 17x17 plate to create the appearance of different landscapes?

Hi there! Baseplates aren't made to connect anything underneath, so you won't be able to put another baseplate on top of this one. They're designed purely to be the bottom of your build. We do make other pieces, called plates, which might fit the bill for you. They're meant to go anywhere in a build, though they're not as large as baseplates. My daughter has the lego friends amusement park. The width of the roller coaster is 27". Will 2 base plates suffice( 30x 30)?

Each baseplate is 15" X 15". Two baseplates next to each other would only measure 15" X 30". You would need four baseplates to form a 30" X 30" square.
