It is stained to look like hardwood, but obviously is softwood. A replacement isn't going to work if it is also softwood, so I purchased an ash hardwood handle for £6.47 and 10 rivets for £5.60 to repair. I previously had a steel handle half moon, This one is not as robust but if used sensibly and with the ash shaft oiled I expect long usageAfter 6 months the half moon broke across the neck. The reason is that this part is cast. Personally I.consider this to be a weakness in the design of the tool. I have also put up a photograph to show clearly where the neck snapped (because of the material used) Cast metal snaps fairly easily as can be seen.
