These work quite well
These are exactly what they say they are and work quite well. They are thin but still stiff enough they are solid plus a (felt?) backing I think it is. I sharpened a pocket knife and 2 kitchen knives without any issues. I just used some water droplets and that worked great. These are thin so use at edge of a table or they have a "base" I think that brings it off the table more but I don't have that. I just set that at the edge of the table (plastic tray like you use to put food on in front of the couch). They didn't slide or move but with diamond strop you don't need pressure so much as you need angle and repetition to sharpen. They have multiple grades which are great for kitchen knives because of the size of the plates. Once you have a good edge I do recommend a dedicated leather strop for kitchen knives. Another dedicated leather strop for pocket, carving knives also. The reason...kitchen knives are long so you will use longer strokes across the whole blade in one motion more often. Pocket knives and carving knives are short so they won't be from edge to edge on the strop so you may make grooves in the leather over time. The grooves can cause issues with longer kitchen knives. Then again I could be totally wrong on this theory but it stems from stopping straight edge razors and it's recommended to have a strop dedicated to Each razor. These work great. Kitchen knives were one stainless chef knife, one carbon chef knife, two smaller knives similar to the stainless steel. All were dull and all cut paper like a razor blade after.

They really work well!
I wish I'd thought to take some pictures to show just how well these work. I had an old hand plane I had been given plus some wood chisels that had been abused badly over the years. The plane blade had no edge at all, completely rounded. The chisels had nicks in the blades and couldn't cut anything. Using an inexpensive hone jig and these diamond plates I was able to bring every one of these tools back to sharp, usable blades. I even cut my finger on the plane blade when testing its edge when before it would have had trouble with soft butter.A couple of the tools took quite some time, nearly 1 hour to get the plane down to an edge, but in one leisurely day I restored 9 wood chisels and the plane blade to razor sharp edges. They are not 'mirror finish' edges but I could probably get to that if I wanted to spend more time with the 1000 and 2000 grit plates. However, I'm more concerned with the blades being useful than with them being pretty, and these are now extremely useful.

Great option for beginners learning to sharpen knives or tools.
I have been sharpening knives and tools for a few years now, and my technique is pretty good. My go to are a set of nice stones that cost 10 times what these did and are great, but heavy and bulky and have to be soaked for a while before using. I bought these to find an option I could take with me to sharpen for friends away from the house and have taken them on flights. So the grit is nice, and you can get a very sharp knife (if you have good technique) with these diamond plates. Note that they will remove the metal on the knife differently initially and once they are worn in as you'll remove some of the diamond dust that is on them. So far they are working well. If you're trying to compare this 1000 to the 1000 of a high quality water stone, then don't... use the changes in grit number to show the plate progression for a good sharpening. Go from low numbers to high, and each is finer, and you create smaller burrs and clean up the edge. Add in a good diamond paste stropping at the end and honestly they've done well for me so far. What I don't like as much... Well I wish they were bigger as it's hard to sharpen longer blades/tools with small plates. Not a fault of these plates as I knew their size going in. I also with they were thicker which would make using them much easier. Also, the backing isn't enough to really keep it in place, but again, this is fixable, but a bit of a hassle. For someone starting out, these are great, and much better option than the low priced sharpening "stones" out there. You can get really good results with these. Not sure how long they'll last, but so far so good
