Filters very well, but not without issues
We have a couple honeybee hives and harvest honey to sell. The two-piece stainless steel honey sieve we use does a good job, but some of the tiniest bee parts occasionally make it through them, so I ordered these honey filter bags to add a third step to our straining process. As far as straining, they are a fine 125-micron mesh, and they did a great job. However, there is one major flaw and that is they will NOT work on any of the 5-gallon food-grade buckets we have or have ever seen. The info shows a picture of one of the bags as if it is on a 5-gallon bucket, but it looks more like a trash can because it is wide at the top and gets narrower as it goes down. Five-gallon buckets have a lip for the lid and a wider lip about an inch or so beneath that and then there's the handle. We could barely squeeze by force to get the bag over the top lip, and there is no way it can go down past the second lip and handle. If it is just around the top lip, the bottom of the bag rests on the bottom of the bucket, so not really able to strain the honey into the bucket, the bottom of the bag would need to set up high toward the top of the bucket to do that. In addition, the info says there is an elastic band that stretches over the bucket. The band is actually a thin rope (very little stretch) with a spring clip to hold it in place. The problem is the "band" won't fit over the bucket lip because the bag is too small, and even if it did fit, the clip will not hold it tightly enough to keep it securely up out of the honey that is straining into the bucket. We decided to just put the mesh strainer between the two parts of our sieve because we really wanted to use it, so we folded it down the best we could to try to keep the extra fabric out of the way. It did a good job straining but was not ideal in how we had to set it up. It also cleaned up easily with soap and water. We will use these when harvesting honey, but we'd like to find some that actually work when straining into a 5-gallon bucket.
