i have 2 switches for the stairs can i use a smart dimmer on one side?

I believe what you mean is a “3-way” situation (two switches that control the same light). This is NOT compatible with 3-way switch situations.

Why does it flicker during work.

Please make sure you are using it in a good 2.4Ghz network environment. If your home is 5Ghz, please switch the network to 2.4Ghz. A bad network environment will affect the use of smart switch.
