Very interesting especially first-mid part.Final part is a little bit boring but still good to read for studying English especially Asian.

I used to love reading. And then I stopped. It was sooo hard for me to find a book to get me back to reading again. This book did that for me! Was hooked and sleepless for a couple of nights!

Well-written. I couldn't have been less interested in the story and the plot. Would not recommend.

物語りの始まりは素晴らかったです。後半部分はあまり魅力的ではありません。中国の"ghost"の部分はちょっと無理感があります。そして結末もあまり素晴らしくなく、期待外れの感じがあります。

Upon hearing that my friend Athena, a bestselling author and my friend since our days at Yale, had secured a film rights contract for her novel with Netflix, I found myself both envious and celebratory. Despite the jealousy, we raised our glasses together in cheers. Inebriated, we engaged in a late-night pancake-making and speed-eating competition at Athena's upscale apartment in Dupont Circle. However, tragedy struck when Athena choked, and my frantic attempts at first aid were in vain, leading to her fatal choking. Shocked, I clandestinely took the manuscript of Athena's just-completed novel, "The Last Front," back to my apartment...-----------------In 2023, quite a few BookTubers in North America enthusiastically recommended this novel. Additionally, Goodreads selected this novel as the top choice in its fiction category for the same year. Intrigued by the protagonist, a writer who steals a friend's manuscript and publishes it as her own, I initially considered waiting for the Japanese translation. However, considering that not even the previous work by this author, "Babel," had news of a Japanese translation, I feared it could be years before "Yellowface" is translated. Therefore, I decided to read the book in English.Fortunately, the English used in the book was easily understandable even for a foreigner like me. Moreover, its captivating nature allowed me to finish reading it in just six days.This novel boasts several charms:Behind-the-scenes insights into the cutthroat world of North American publishing.A gripping tale of ascending to literary stardom with a stolen manuscript.Tense psychological portrayals of the protagonist's fear of eventual exposure.A contemporary narrative of online defamation pushing the protagonist to the brink.The emergence of a mysterious figure stalking the protagonist under the guise of deceiving Athena, blending horror and mystery.Despite its eerie nature, the story is filled with black humor that prompts involuntary laughter.The clash between the ideals of diversity and the relentless logic of capitalism.Despite incorporating such a myriad of themes, the story remains cohesive and masterful.The ending defied all my shallow predictions, leaving me thrilled with its skillful conclusion. Discovering the adept writer Rebecca F. Kuang has brought me immense joy.

The book is entertaining but the name dropping?! Especially the Taylor Swift line? Was so vile, people need to stop making fun of celebrities’ names, so unhinged and unnecessary, those details just make the book sound desperate for attention. Boo 👎

20代後半になったJuneとAthenaは、イエール大学の新入生だった時に知り合い、同じ文芸雑誌で短編小説をデビューさせたという共通点で繋がっているが、特に仲が良い友人というわけではない。Juneが書いた最初の小説はあまり売れず、それ以来作家としてのキャリアは止まったままになっている。それに比べ、Athenaは超ベストセラー作家として成功し、作品がNetflixで映像化されることも決まった。2人でその祝いをしている最中にAthenaが思いもよらない事故で死亡し、JuneはAthenaが極秘に書いていた次作の原稿を持ち去る。Athenaの次作は彼女のこれまでの作品とは異なるジャンルで、第一次世界大戦の時にイギリス政府が14万人の中国人を「非戦闘員」として戦争に送り込んだ「Chinese Labour Corps（中国労工旅）」をテーマにした歴史小説だった。この小説『The Last Front』の魅力を即座に理解したJuneは、綿密に書き直して刊行することに成功した。作品は大ヒットし、Juneは夢にみたベストセラー作家になったのだが、問題はAthenaが中国系であるのに対し、Juneは白人だということだ。Juneのこの新作のペンネームの名字はSongであり中国系の名前だという印象がある。ヒッピーの親が「歌」という意味でつけたミドルネームをペンネームとして使うように出版社が示唆したのだ。また、本の著者近影には微妙にアジア系に見える写真が使われている。June自身は最初から「私は白人」と言っていたが、多くの読者は中国系の作家だと思いこんでいた。本が売れるにつれて、白人のJuneがわざとアジア系のふりをしているというCultural Appropriation（文化の盗用）を批判する者が出てきた。ツイッターなどのソーシャルメディアでの攻撃はさらに過激になっていく…。過去20年以上身近で観察している者としては、アメリカの出版業界は過去10年くらいの間にかなり変化したように感じる。以前は出版社のイチオシ注目作品の過半数は白人男性作家のものだったのに、近年の出版社のイチオシには女性作家のほうが多いように感じる。また、以前はアジア系作家のものは「移民小説」ばかりであり、それ以外のジャンルでアジア系作家が作品を出版するのは困難だった。ペンネームを白人的に変えた作家もいる。ところが、最近ではどのジャンルでもアジア系の作家がアジア系の名前でベストセラー作家になっている。「多様性」が実現していることにポジティブな印象を抱いていたのだが、R. F. KuangのYellowfaceを読むと、現場では偽善的な「多様性」がまだまだ存在しているのだと想像せざるを得ない。R. F. KuangのYellowfaceはこういったことも含めて「うわぁ、こんなこと書いていいの？」とギョッとする大胆な風刺が散りばめられている。たとえば、白人全員が悪人に描かれると白人読者に受け入れられない可能性があるので、Juneは中国人の労働者と白人女性との間の愛を取り入れたり、白人の登場人物を好意的に描いたりといった編集をする。この部分で、南部の黒人召使いと彼女たちを援助する白人女性を描いてベストセラーになった『The Help』（作品と映画）を思い出す読者もいるだろう。人種差別というテーマを扱いながらも、それに救いの手をのべるのは白人の登場人物であり、結果的に白人の読者がいい気持ちになれるという構造がある。これらは最近では「white-savior story」と呼ばれ、批判されるようになっている（私はこの批判の意図は理解するが、全面的に同意するわけではない）。この小説の面白いところは、最初はJune叩きに忙しかったソーシャルメディアが、そのうちAthenaも叩くようになっているリアルさだ。アジア系の若者たちがAthenaに対して「その人種だったら書く権利があるのか？」という批判もしている。このあたりは、American Dirtを巡る論争を意識したものだ。複雑な問題を単純化して暴走するソーシャルメディアからは誰も逃れられない。作者自身を連想させるAthenaに対しても作者は容赦なく揶揄している。かなり意地悪な作品であり、Juneの言動にこちらが恥ずかしくなってしまったり、目を覆いたくなってしまったりする。そして、最後まで、決して良い気持ちにはさせてくれない。前作のBabelとはまったく異なるジャンルの小説だが、「最後まで決して良い気持ちにはさせてくれないが読む価値がある鋭い小説」という意味では共通している。R. F. Kuangはすごい作家である。
