Did anyone have a issue putting the string guard on? We cannot seem to get it to fit.

Yeah. The string guard fits poorly on mine too and every now and then it looses. It seems like a design flaw.

I'm getting this as a present for someone and would like to include spare strings and some picks. What would you recommend I get for a beginner?

I like D'addorio ej74 medium phosphor coated for the sound. Also for picks I like a heavy round triangular pick such as Dunlop sells. Good luck.

Does this mandolin have an adjustable bridge?

Yes it does. In fact, when I had the strings replaced, the music store employee adjusted the bridge to help improve the sound (noticeably). For the price range, it has a decent sound.
