Q: Does it come in one big pound or will I have to cut the soap into bars myself ?

It comes in one pound blocks. I actually cut each block in quarters, and use them that way. I don't waste as much that way.

Q: Is this suitable to use as a melt and pour soap base?

Melting and adding any other ingredients will change the composition of the soap. It will not solidify again like typical melt and pour soap. Straining it will not make it solid. If you add water or strain it will stay in liquid form. Hope this helps.
