Great quality.. BUT now made in CHINA
Even though it is now made in China, it is still a well made product. You can snuff the flame easily without blowing it out, or removing the bottom. My only significant gripe is now it is made in China..but the price of the lamp has not come down accordingly (at all, actually). If you are mounting it on a boat's bulkhead, buy the gimbal mount, not the hanging mount, to prevent damage to your bulkead from the lamp swaying.Buy W+P oil - it is not overly expensive, works well, and is sootless.

Weems & Plath 700
Owned for 6 months and it has been a great addition to the boat. No problems. Only negative is that the hook on top will get hot, so be careful when moving the lamp. This is a very high quality product. We use it almost every night we stay on board. Sets a very warm mood in the cabin or on the dinner table. If you are looking for "day light" from this lamp, I would look at others. For what we need, this works great on our 36 foot boat. The W&P Oil/fuel is very clean and efficient.

Dim!
I have a friend who has an oil lamp for his boat, about the same size as this. It is not Weems and Plath but probably a lot cheaper. I bought this lamp hoping to get the same warm glow in the cabin of my boat as he has in his (both 30' boats). I got the premium oil, high quality, put it in the lamp and lit it. I was very disapointed!!! I let it burn for over an hour thinking the wick might need some conditioning. I could not read a book 2ft away from this lamp. It also oscillated, went from dim to dimmer every 2 seconds or so. This was in still air. I am returning this lamp!!!

Disappointing
I wanted to love this product. It's so hefty and shippy. But it sheds very little light. The bars running vertically along the cage block more light than it seems they should. No matter how high I raised the flame, the lamp didn't illuminate the cabin of even my tiny Montgomery 17 sailboat. The search for mellow, gimbaled, oil-based illumination continues . . .

Nearly there except for two things.
Really love the look of this. It is a good display piece and a well made lamp with a heavy base. Mine came with the gimbal (and a boat), I would not want it without that. As other reviewers have said, it is not bright.Mine also came with a catalytic converter and due to the small flame it has little to no oil smell.30 hours on 5oz of fuel !?! Who can beat that? It may make a good anchor light or night light, you may love that, I get headaches easily with any flame burning and plan to put it in the forward berth so I probably won't leave it burning all night. Lighting and extinguishing also mean having to unscrew the burner from the base.I got a Den Hann Boat Mini Trawler Oil Lamp from my step dad that he used sailing around the world back in the 1980's, it has a round wick that makes it way, way brighter. Air flows up the middle, making it more efficient and brighter than you may imagine, it is a little more expensive than this though. I'm not sure I would ever buy a flat wick lamp again. As for this, the output and current price of $140 downgrade this otherwise 5 star lamp to a three star.

Very Elegant addition to our boat
Very Elegant addition to our boat. We were pleasantly surprised at the high quality and workmanship. We paid more than your generic lamp, but well worth it.
