ലക്ഷണമൊത്ത ആദ്യ മലയാളനോവൽ എന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ള കൃതിയാണ് ചന്തുമേനോന്റെ ഇന്ദുലേഖ. 1889-ലാണ് ഇന്ദുലേഖ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കുന്നത്. കോളിൻസ് മദാമ്മയുടെ ഘാതകവധം (1877), ആർച്ച് ഡീക്കൻ കോശിയുടെ പുല്ലേലിക്കുഞ്ചു (1882), അപ്പു നെടുങ്ങാടിയുടെ കുന്ദലത (1887) തുടങ്ങിയവയാണ് ഇന്ദുലേഖയ്ക്കു മുൻപുണ്ടായ നോവൽമാതൃകകൾ. ഒരു നായർ കുടുംബത്തിലെ കഥയാണ് ഈ നോവലിന്റെ ഇതിവൃത്തം. നായർ-നമ്പൂതിരി സമുദായങ്ങളിലെ മരുമക്കത്തായവും, ജാതി വ്യവസ്ഥയും നമ്പൂതിരിമാർ പല വേളികൾ കഴിക്കുന്ന സമ്പ്രദായവും[അവലംബം ആവശ്യമാണ്] അന്നത്തെ നായർ സമുദായച്യുതിയും ഇന്ദുലേഖയുടെയും മാധവന്റെയും പ്രണയകഥയിലൂടെ ചന്തുമേനോൻ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം കൂടി അംഗമായിരുന്ന മലബാർ വിവാഹ കമ്മീഷന്റെ തീരുമാനങ്ങളെ സ്വാധീനിക്കുവാൻ ഈ നോവലിനു സാധിച്ചു[അവലംബം ആവശ്യമാണ്]. മലയാളത്തിലെ പില്കാല നോവലുകളെ ഒരു വലിയ അളവിൽ ഇന്ദുലേഖ സ്വാധീനിച്ചു. I am very glad to have read this. It is delightfully written. The authors comments through out are very interesting. The philosophical discussions among the characters reveal the cultural issues some of which are still very relevant. Excellent reading!

An enjoyable read
This books brings out clearly the social system prevailing in the last century. The way upper caste Namboodiri class exploited the Nair community is evident. The strong character of Indulekha shows with good education the women can achieve what they want. The author has pedagogical style of storytelling. But it's enjoyable.
