Bestselling artist and writer Hazel Soan has distilled her art teaching into the things that matter most and can be digested in a short period of time – in just one afternoon you can start painting. Learning to paint is one of the life-long aspirations of many of us, and these techniques can be picked up faster than you think. Hazel Soan’s concise book, filled with easy-to-follow instructions and step-by-step exercises, is written in an accessible way for those completely new to painting. Chapters include: Getting Started (the materials you will need and those you can ignore in the art shop); Choice of Colours; Mixing Colours; What’s the Subject?; What Surfaces to Paint on; Basic Painting Techniques; Brushstrokes and Composition (with details on how to design paintings with horizon, focus and balance, a hint of perspective and the light and shade of a subject). Packed with illustrations for guidance, this is the most comprehensive guide to learning watercolour very quickly. Review: Inspirational with invaluable tips - A delight to read. High quality images that inspire and demonstrate Hazel’s teaching. This is not a step by step book but more of a conceptual book of things you need to know, consider, and apply for successful watercolor paintings. I found the information extremely helpful. I love the simplicity and freshness of the technique in allowing the medium to do its thing. I am a new watercolorist with a background in oils, and found this book to be especially helpful to get me started. I jumped right in and filled an entire sketchbook in a few weeks. I learned to paint successful watercolors in less than an hour. I love the quickness, simplicity, and beauty of this approach. I love Hazel’s work! Review: Hazel Soan is a wonderful skilled watercolour artist - This little book takes the lessons of technique from Hazel Soan's first book, which appear at the end of each chapter and collects them in one place - into this little gem "Learn Watercolour Quickly". Hazel Soan is a wonderful skilled watercolour artist. Her classic methods and wonderful subjects (ranging from African elephants and Cheetahs to London scenes and Italian gardens) give a wide range of practice. Excellent!

A Fun Book
Overall, I really like this book. The things I like most are: 1. supply tips for the absolute beginner 2. discussion of basic things you need to know about working with watercolors 3. a few easy projects to try that yield a degree of success for the absolute beginner, and 4. the small size of the book, 6"x8", which makes it handy if you want to practice painting outside or on vacation. What I wish it had more of is #3, that is, more practical examples I can copy in order to practice the basics she talks about in the book. For the most part, she uses her own paintings for examples, which is fine, but it's obvious you need some drawing expertise. And, for me, a lot of practice!

Did I expect too much…..
Did not meet my expectations. The book is put together very nicely; but something just seems to be missing. When I am using a book for instruction I want to feel a connection with the author, hence the material. It is a very simplistic view of watercolor; but somehow I was left wanting. I have been creating watercolor paintings for years and love it….but this book did not make me feel like picking up a brush.

Good book
I have not finished this book yet because I am making myself take it slow, but so far the instructions and progression seem to be perfect.

Consigliato
