National Hardware V23A 8" Adjust-O-Matic® Heavy Duty Gate Latch

This unit is very heavy duty and just works. I have had the smaller ones and you have to constantly adjust them. This one never needs adjusting. Also the smaller ones would not latch a lot of times. This one latches 98% of the time. Very happy with it.

I bought the 6 and 8 inch versions. The 6 was very flimsy so I returned it. The 8 is very heavy duty. The quality difference between the 6 inch is huge. The latch opens very smoothly. I mounted it on heavy steel gate. The previous latch broke off in the wind. This one should last a long time. I replaced the wood screws with stainless steel M6 bolts which I tapped into the steel posts. The latch is a bit longer than I needed, but better than too short. The pivoting bar is also a nice touch in case the gate starts to sag a little. The black finish is good quality and resists scratching. I've very happy with the build quality and the smooth operation. Update: It's been over a year and the latch has held up well. The black coating has worn off where the bolt contacts the receiver and in a few other friction spots. This gate tends to get slammed frequently so I am pleased by the build quality. I ordered a second latch from a vendor called Cargo.co and was disappointed that they sent me a latch that was clearly used and in poor cosmetic condition. I had better luck with the vendor Stanley National Hardware.

Make sure size fits for your application. Take into seasonal humidity when using. Some sag in gates need to be taken into account.

This gate latch works perfectly. Easy to install and heavy duty. Comes with all the screws you need and very good instructions on the package.

I received my National Hardware V23A 8" gate latch in good condition, and found it to be well made and indeed Heavy Duty. The reason for the less than great review is that there was little instruction on exactly how to install the latch. Though it appears easy enough to do without instructions, instructions would have been helpful, particularly with alignment and placing the mechanics in the correct orientation. But the unexpected item which truly does warrant a less than great review is that two of the bolts which came with the device broke during installation. I truly expected more from what appeared at first glance to be a truly "Heavy Duty" installation kit. Bear in mind that I was installing this latch to a non-wood post (no rot dense plastic equivalent). I was also installing this in 25 degree (F) conditions. So the latch mechanism seemed well designed and heavy duty, but the screw quality was not great....requiring me to look for an alternate solution since the gate latch is now missing two of the matching bolts.

This is such a sturdy and well thought out gate latch. It's designed to adjust to wood movement throughout seasons and temperature changes and is very flexible for a variety of installs

We have struggled with our gate latches for years. Depending on the humidity, our gate tends to move or swell, which usually throws the alignment off. We switched to this Adjust-O-Matic, and it has been a huge help. It is solid, well-made, and handles those seasonal shifts perfectly. Unlike our old latches, this one doesn't require us to go out and constantly adjust it to get it to close. If you have a wood gate that "moves," get this.

Great product, heavy duty

The product works great. The lactches are super heavy duty and have a great feel when opening. The only issue was the screws that came with seem flimsy in comparison to the latch. Two of them broke in half even though I had drilled good pilot holes. So I only have three screws in each of the two latches I bought.

After years of people letting the gate slam, all the initial hardware screw holes have become damaged. This was the perfect solution! Bigger latch allowed for new screw holes, love how easily it lates in every season of the wood expanding and contracting. It’s quiet too, no slamming latch sounds! Love it! Thank you!
