I bought this set to distribute among 3 sons. They LOVED, LOVED the lighter so much. It's useful, you never know when you might need this, but if you do- you'll be happy you bought it. It's perfect for lighting a fire, or cig, when a regular lighter isn't available or if wind/weather conditions make a traditional lighter (or matches) unusable.Best part of this is: unlike a BIC or Zeppo (or the like), these do not require lighter fluid, or any other flammable liquid. It lights itself using a striker, which creates a spark on the rope, and then you have a burning ember on the end of the rope which can be used to ignite a fire.It's great for people who like World War II inspired items, survival enthusiasts, novel item collectors, etc. My son's loved it just because it looks so different from modern lighters and it works really well with or without wind. I would definitely recommend this particular lighter. I tried each lighter before gifting them to my sons. I was delighted to see them working, as described. Very cool, very useful.

I just turned 65, and one lesson I've learned very well over those years is that often times "old school" is the best school of all. These work beautifully, and I'm amazed at their effectiveness. Something that has been around since World War One will work just as well today for you, as it did for those poor guys slogging around in the mud and the blood way back then. Simple and effective, and I'm glad I bought three of them. These could literally be a life saver when you can't get a match or a lighter to stay lit. Awesome, and I love things that are so simple in their nature, yet just as effective as any modern computer designed item. They are a marvel unto themselves. Totally brilliant, and just awesome.

These rope lighters are great! They catch spark easily and the wind doesn't blow it out, rather it makes it work better. I got mine a few years back and looked it so much I got three more for gifts and a backup for myself. It's even good for letting my son use for firecrackers, the pubks they hand out at the stands always have the ember fall off, but not theses bad boys.

Bought this set to use the flint spring and screw for a different lighter thinking that this wouldn’t work very well. Followed directions and burned the end for a minute then let it cooled down. It took 1 turn of the flint wheel to create a spark that created the glowing ember. Typically it will take 1 or sometimes 2 sparks to get the rope to burn. Then pull the rope which pulls the ball bearing plug and snuffs out the burn. Simple and effective. I keep 1 in each car for emergencies.

Cool little gadget that has a nostalgic feel to it, but keep in mind, it only produces a glowing ember that it very difficult to use to light anything other than tobacco in a pipe with breath being drawn through it (perfect for that though). Does seem to be wind proof/resistant as the more oxygen on the glowing ember, the more it glows! Follow instructions and char it first with a bic lighter before first use.

These are great little gifts for those in your life that like to get out into the woods or simply be prepared for life's inevitable challenges. This product is well made, sturdy and does exactly what it advertises, create sparks and a glowing ember. I like them so much I've purchased them twice now for gifts.

Works well....a forgotten skill...works well as an emergency fire starter

Simple design. Made of metal. Lights up every time as long as the rope is dry and your flint is good. Treat it like a Zippo and you'll be fine. Want to light up a cigarette while in the direct path of a tornado? This would be the lighter to do it with. While your body is getting thrown around violently this little guy will continue to burn brighter than your future. Bought the pack of 3 and I will 100% buy more. They also come in a little black bag each so that's nice too.
