Difficulty to use
It looks nice but the surfaces aren’t even remotely rough enough to gain enough friction to really break down spices, garlic, and ginger. The pestle just pushes the items inside around. The small size of it also compounds this issue.This is a wonderful item for decoration’s sake but isn’t useful for those who want to implement it in their cooking.Because I refuse to waste money on another fairly useless trinket like this, I’ve purchased a coffee/spice grinder instead.

Perfect size
I love it! Beautiful piece. Small enough to leave on counter without taking up a lot of Real estate. But deep enough to hold a lot. Washes very easily, and after using for several different things doesn’t stain or seem to hold in smells.

Works Well - a bit small
When our pestle broke on our old mortar/pestle I bought this after a recommendation from Cooks Illustrated. It works well but a four inch bowl is a bit small for my taste. Our old one was six inches which to me is just about perfect. Other than that minor complaint, this works well and is very attractive out on the counter.

Marbly goodness
A gift for a very good home cook, this mortar and pestle set was just what she was wishing for. She really likes the look of the marble and it works very well.
