just as good as I remember
Read these books in high school. 25 now and was wondering if they were as good as I remember. Just finished book 1 and yes, it is very much as good as I remember. On to book 2!

A tasteful adventure (Spoil Free)
To properly rate this book-- 4.5 stars-- you have to take the elements into play that were used: emotions, imagery, plot twists and how well they played into the story overall, and realism tainted with fantasy.Darren gave the reader a lot to think about when reading this book, and I must say that there was quite a bit. From beginning to end, there was no dull or unnecessary page that didn't paint some picture in my head, from the events that unfolded to the people and places themselves. It was well written to make you emerge into the world of "The Demon at a #1: Lord Loss" and see from a 1st person view of the protagonist as they made their way through the book; not missing an important detail that would leave one breathless and on the edge of their seat. This book was a lovely trip that one could say had "so much imagery and felt far too real." Darren included necessary amounts of visionary properties that didn't tell too much or too little of what was currently present (i.e. every detail of any given thing/person or left out important information). What was told in this adventure served purpose to the conclusion.I was left on a beautiful ride that I kept me wanting more from this title and I was given everything and more. The reason for the 4.5 rating is because there is a syntax error that separates a sentence in a place that makes 2 incomplete and awkward sentences.

Book structure, NOT content
The content and book is great. Started reading the book, and in 2 days the binding began to undue. Disappointed in this as I wanted to keep this item long term. The binding already has to be glued and fixed after 2 days reading it. As a librarian, we don’t fold or stretch the binding, so not that issue.

My 14 year old loved it
I read this in high school and got it for my son for his birthday. He loved it and is excited to get the next book in the series.

Interest-Grabbing Beginning For This Series
Darren Shan is an outstanding writer. First the 12 Cirque Du Freak books and now Lord Loss. Shan's interpretation of other dimensions and evil like the Demonata that exist in those dimensions leave the reader spellbound. This book begins with a normal brother and sister relationship with cruel revenge because the sister rats on the brother, so he RATS on her so to speak.I won't give anything away, but after a tragedy, Grubbs finds himself grief-stricken and alone, and that is only the beginning. Grubbs is introduced to a whole new existence and a family genealogy and curse that he could never imagine. Will Grubbs have to face the Demonata, will his new friend and Uncle Dervish be able to break their family curse in a battle of humans versus demons and their familiars, or will Grubbs former grief be too much for him to overcome?Read The Demonata Lord Loss and enter Darren Shan's never-ending world of intrigue with his own ideas of topics that have been told and retold, but nothing compares to Darren Shan. He took vampires to a different level, and now...The Demonata Lord Loss...LOOK OUT!!!

Gory, grotesque and glorious
I've read this book once before as a kid and boy did I forget a lot. The violent upheaval of a young man's life leading him to discover untold powers in himself and his family mixed with the gut wrenching fear and disgust of meeting his ancestors greatest enemy all while trying to save his uncle and siblings life. Just perfection! Definitely a bit more mature but honestly young teens could enjoy this.

Audiobook?
I love the book series but I don't have a lot of free time. I like audio books and was really hoping to find it on here. I had finally found an unofficial audio series with good quality on YouTube but the series was removed when I was halfway through bec.
