Q: what is the measurement between shelves?

I measured quickly but I think a little over 10 inches. I left the middle shelf out to fit a taller item so it was about 21 inches from the top to bottom shelf.

Q: I like the open front on the middle shelf for ease in putting large items on it. Is there another open front shelf...just to be sure.

all of them are open, just realize that the whole cart is not that big.

Q: What's the height of the top shelf?

From the top of the top shelf to the top of the side rail is 5". Very nice sturdy cart.

Q: Can you stand standard books on the shelves? 11" height?

This is a quality item. We are very satisfied with this purchase. We use it for a stainless steel trash can filled with dog food on the top shelf and packages of sodas (4 fit perfectly - 2 per shelf) BUT just for you we put a nine inch height book on the middle shelf. Alas, an 11" book is too tall for the middle and bottom shelves (9-10" would be max ht). The top shelf would easily hold a # of books standing (shelf beyond frame = 15" width x 11" depth x 10" height).
