A very difficult read
This is hard to read at all - the narrative jumps around in time and place a LOT, more so at the beginning. Then the viewpoint shifts to that of someone else entirely. There are a lot of elements in common with the Gorean novels, though we are spared the repeated several-pages-long monologs common in that series. Its not a bad story, but its not really good enough to make one in much of a hurry to get the next book in the series.

who actually like the Telnarian histories
I am one of the few fans of John Norman, apparently, who actually like the Telnarian histories. I recommend this tightly written and fast-paced space adventure story.

John Norman strikes again - a must-read
I love these books by Norman. There is plenty of his characteristically sexual themes of warriors and conquered women and it is good to see them off Gor. Norman rarely disappoints and your collection won't be complete without the Telnarian histories. There's a new fourth book in the series out too.

One/half Star
1. I'm not coninced this story was written by John Norman. The writing style between this series and the Gor series are radicaly different. Not even close to the same.2. The Chieftan is so slow I have to force myself to stay focused on it.

Conan the Barbarian meets Gor
I have read most of John Normans books, and enjoyed them so I probably had higher expectations for this book than it really deserved.Vol 1 says it all, this book is a scene setter, with a simple story and reminded me clearly of the early Conan the Barbarian series. The hero is an unknown barbarian who interacts with a despotic Empire but really achieves very little.Yes I will read volume two.

Took a while for John Norman to tell the tale ...
Took a while for John Norman to tell the tale and then things see,med to happen quickly with bits missed out as the hero jumped ahead in time. Please don't dilly dally with the story John -get on with it and leave out some of the background stuff that really does not add to the story.
