Informative
I liked reading this for the most part. At the end of each chapter (or theory, since that's how they break it up) they put the theory to use using the stories in the back of the book. I found myself skipping the end of every chapter because I understood what they were talking about without seeing it. I'd obviously never pick the book up and read it for pleasure but it was very good for understanding aspects of my critical theory class.

Really improves my way of thinking. Class was a breeze with this book!! Absolutely phenomenal!! Only critique. It doesn’t include womanism

Looks like a quick, lazy release. Lacks a lot of useful information.
Feels like this was lazily written. The examples given vary in quality, and don't seem to go into enough depth. It was a required textbook, so I had to buy it and use it. If you're looking for a book just to understand critical theory, this isn't the book for you.

Awesome Book For Lit Theory
This book was so helpful in understanding the theories used in my very first Literary Theory class. I found the explanations to be much easier to comprehend than in my Lit book. I would recommend the book for anyone who is new (or not) to the Theories in Literature.

Tyson's work rocks
This text was the main text for my Intro to Lit. Crit. class this summer. She presents the theories clearly and with excellent examples--and even if she repeats the sample texts, the differences between theories makes it seem like a new story/poem/novel. I liked it very much as did my students.

Excellent
This book is great, very understandable and relatable, even interesting. Tyson does a great job breaking down concepts to be easily remembered. A great accompaniment in my writing intensive class.

Excellent with great samples
Every AP and college literature teacher needs to read and teach from this book!

Some of the most US-centered commentary I ever read. Leaves out too many things - badly explains most.
I Bought this book on theory for Uni. We used it with another by Hans Bertens (much, much better!)This one exasperated me soon enough: Badly explained theory is useless theory. Our whole class (even the prof!) often disagreed with the author - and over things that should be commonground. At least how to explain them. But no, chapter after chapter, I felt as if I could have learned a lot more in less sentences.I would rather recommend Hans Bertens: Literary Theory - The Basicsor Literary Theory: An Anthology by Rivkin and Ryan. Now that's a great one, because it contains original text. All the examples in this one are centered on US experience, and the author targets openly US pupils and (young!) students. I didn't like it, and I especially didn't like that in every chapter, there's this repeated bit of text going "Don't worry if you've not yet fully understood the aspects of this theory, you will get used to it blablabla..." That this is a book on theory that tries to be very user-friendly is a good idea, but for the most part, the actual theories (LGTBQ, African-American, Marxist...) are explained in such a limited way that they become useless. Especially missing is a good part on Formalist and then Post-Structuralist Theory. There's just not enough in there. So "thanks, no thanks" from me.
