A box of delights
Brilliant are just that, brilliant. They are on a mission to bring good music to the masses as cheaply as possible and they do this admirably through their box sets. I'd already got the Complete Mozart and was impressed with the quality of those recordings so it wasn't too much of a gamble to purchase the Bach set. I did not make a mistake, the recordings are first class, all of them. Notable are the complete organ works which are the legendary Hans Fagius / BIS set and the Jacob Lindburg / BIS Lute Suites. Many of the cantatas and other choral works are recorded especially for Brilliant by leading specialists in early music including such stars as The Sixteen, Roy Goodman, Peter Schreier, Rogers Covey-Crump, Michael George, Emma Kirkby & Michael Chance and the performances are as good as I've heard. The standard for this box set is consistently high so if you are in the market for a lot Bach then you can't go wrong, especially at the price.

Excellent. Though the box was a bit worn
Excellent. Though the box was a bit worn. But the CDs are wonderful and the price a fraction of the full cost.

A set like this takes time to absorb
A set like this takes time to absorb: there's little point in trying to work through it in a hurry. Having owned the CDs for some time, and slowly got to know it, I'd say that it's excellent value. Naturally I already had quite a few discs of my favourite versions of individual works; but the low cost of this set enabled me to hear everything else. While the favourite versions are still favourites, I don't hear anything here which is less than good, and much that is very good indeed. The DVDs are a bonus, and the CD-ROM containing all the music of the standard edition, plus copious notes, seems to me a great idea: think of how much shelf-space a printed text would occupy. So if, like me, you love Bach's music but haven't yet heard all of it, now's the time.

Addictive good value
The appealing price (could anything so cheap include good performances?) and vast scale (can I cope with 157 disc of Bach?) of this undertaking had put me off for a while. Now I've taken the plunge, and am about 30 CDs into the listening, I can recommend the set whole-heartedly. All the recordings so far have been very good or excellent. And they are already opening my ears to things I 'thought I didn't like' - I'm really enjoying a disc of Cantatas each evening, and finding them far more varied and enticing than I had imagined.A couple of points to note which may influence some people: almost all recordings use original instruments, a high proportion of the Cantatas feature the renowned but rather distinctive alto, Sytse Buwalda, and all the discs of keyboard music are played on the harpsichord. These are not criticisms, but they affect the listening experience - I know quite a few people who can't listen to a harpsichord for more than an hour at a time. Of course, switching between genres gives a huge choice here.Personal favorites so far are the two splendid discs of the violin sonatas, with Luis Otavio Santos on baroque violin (not a performer I knew, but sweet-toned and stylish) and Pieter-Jan Belder, ever effective on harpsichord.Hesitate no more - if only one disc in 10 is to your taste, it's still good value. And though I didn't come here to advertise, if you want an inexpensive, readable and authoritative guide to what you're hearing, I'm enjoying Nicholas Kenyon's Faber book too. The Faber Pocket Guide to Bach Postscript: two months later, having enjoyed the 60 discs of cantatas, I'm even more enthusiastic about this set. It's opened up a world of music which I was unsure about, which I love. Go for it!

recommended
A booklet listing the works would have been a useful addition. Otherwise, the set was in very good condition, the performances generally of high standard, and I enjoyed the period instruments. A recommended compilation, very good value.

Perfect transaction
I ordered two box sets. Not only did each box arrive quickly it was carefully wrapped and secured; so much so that in order to have successfully damaged the contents you would have had to drop it off a very tall building into the path of an oncoming steamroller. Thank you very much indeed. The box set is excellent because Bach wrote a lot of work indeed and each work in this set is unequivocally his; any piece that is not certainly Bach's is left out. Each piece (as far as possible) is played on the authentic instruments of his time with no modern additions such as a Grand Piano. Please note the harpsichord is not in anyway a piano it is a plucked instrument so don't compare them they are each beautiful.

One excellent bargain: 2006 Brilliant Classics JS Bach edition
I purchased this 2006 Bach edition in July, 2017 and am very happy with the results. This Brilliant Classics release is a budget set, but very good quality for the $90 (58 cents per disc!) I paid for it.My main reason for purchase was the sacred Cantatas, presented here in 1999 recordings by the Holland Boy Choir,Netherlands Bach Collegium (period instruments) and soloists including Ruth Holton and Bas Ramseller directed by Pieter Jan Leusink. These are definite Chamber performances: small orchestra, but well recorded. Leusink'S BWV 1 and 140 are both excellent; he doesn't drag tempos as many conductors do.If you are looking for a good set of Johann Sebastian Bach's Cantatas, and don't mind period instruments, this may fill the bill. If you already have the Cantatas led by John Eliot Gardiner (SDG), Helmuth Rilling (Hanssler) or Masaaki Suzuki (BIS), you don't need this. The solo keyboard works here are all harpsichord. The Violin Concertos are good (grade B), not excellent. I like Trevor Pinnock/English Concert (DG Archiv) for the harpsichord and violin Concertos. This is one excellent bargain. No texts for choral works; check Wikipedia for those: list of Bach Cantatas is invaluable.
