what a wonderful story
this is now a part of my classroom traditions. the story has taken on a very important role in our little ones learning to understand time passage. I teach 2 - 4 year olds. I love this book and the illustrations are okay. the most important thing is that the story really is well told and the children enjoy the tale. this book is a treasure to me.

Another Winner in the Chinese Zodiac Race!
Delightful illustrations accompany a well told legend of how the animals of the Chinese Zodiac were chosen. I used this book to compare/contrast with another excellent version of the legend, The Race for the Chinese Zodiac. My third graders really enjoyed both books. I'm glad I bought the two of them!

Fun retelling of the folk tale
My youngest loves this story. She is a rat and I am an ox, so if you know the story, you know why she likes it so much. The illustrations in the book are very nice. I read this book to a kindergarten class, and the kids enjoyed it; I paraphrased a few of the passages to keep the story going as sections of the text get a little more wordy than others. Overall a very fun book that covers the folk tale of how the Chinese zodiac was created and why cat and rat are bitter enemies.

My son was so happy to receive this book, he read it and loves it! A great book to introduce the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac to children.

Beautiful pictures and fun for kids. We will definitely be using this every year in my classroom when teaching about Chinese New Year.

A book that my children ask to have read again and again. A great race as the book title says.

Actually this tale goes back more than a few thousand years....
Before being introduced to the complexities of Chinese Astrology, this tale was told to young children. The "Great Race" is a fun story as to how the animals earned their position in the zodiac. The qualities each showed being a guideline for life's path. e.g. Rat 1st position for being smartA great story for all ages.

Lovely book
Super easy and simple to read. Suitable for 2-3 years old. It is a bit confusing when I have to explain to my son who is 10 about Lunar Calendar and how Chinese New Year doesn't follow the Western calendar. Apart from that, he enjoyed the story.

Great to explain Chinese New year
Purchased this to help explain Chinese New year to my Preschool class.They really enjoyed it and the illustrations are wonderful.

Lovely book
Lovely book, I got it for my niece and nephew for lunar new year so they could hear the story I was told when I was younger. Easy to read and understand, the kids loved it the story and the illustrations.

A good read for youngsters
I enjoyed reading this story to my five year old grandson who is half Chinese. It is also a book which he can read himself and the illustrations are lovely. The story helps him to understand the Chinese horoscope signs (and me too!).
