When the Giant comes to the door you should let him in.
This is a must have for any "serious" I say that jokingly, but a must have for any giant fans or any other hardcore prog fans. Gives insight into the genius of gentle giant and is just a joy to listen to, the recording isn't amazing quality but isn't that just part of the magic?

A Interesting but Frustrating Set.
Well I am a big Gentle Giant fan and it pains me to say this set is not that good. the primary issue is most of it has been issued elsewhere which wouldn't be so bad if this had complete copies of those various releases but much of the time this excepts from other releases so you feel like you are missing something still. i'll go disc by disc and explain a little.disc 1all the rehearsals and studio excepts are from scraping the barrel many of them are new to cd as they were on the mp3 data disc so that is ok to have. I find this kind of stuff pretty interesting with one big caveat. for some reason they have included the 17 minute long I lost My Head (composing 2), this is not a long lost 17 minute edition of the song it is 17 minutes of Kerry Minnear trying out the main piano theme with very minor variations and it is far too long to be of much interest. it was relegated to the data disc originally for a very good reason and using it here is just a major waste of disc space that could have been put to better use.The live tracks on this disc hail from two semi bootleg releases Endless Life and Artistically Cryme it is quite frustrating just getting a song or 2 of these shows and the quality is not very high so why bother it is not like these are particularly rare songs free hand even has the ending cut off. pointless.so the first disc is a mixed bag more on the not going to listen to again sidedisc 2This is actually nice to have on disc the pinewood rehearsals were primarily on the data disc of scraping the barrel and they are quite interesting to hear and a decent performance with some early live takes on missing piece material particularly a longer version of Winning. what is odd is that the track listing is jumbled up compared to what is on the data disc. Not sure which is the right way but either way I like this one.disc 3This is a pretty good disc as well the excerpts and rehearsals are similarly all from Scraping the Barrel data disc but they are all fairly short and interesting, then the live show is from a previously released cd called the missing face but this time it is the entire show so if you do not have that disc (I don't) you get it entirely here. So in effect this disc is like a special edition of the missing face with some bonus studio excerpts not bad at all.disc 4this disc i have a issue with, the live show is the classic GG at GG show which any gentle giant fan ought to have already because it was part of one of the few dvd releases of gentle giant. it has also been released on many other bootlegs so it is extremely available. plus if you are like me and have the GG at the GG dvd you can't sell it now that there is a repeat of the cd because you want to keep the dvd portion. and if you do not have it you should still grab it because that dvd is excellent. so the live portion of this disc is really pointless and annoying to include it is also the third show from this missing piece era so a little overkill on that specific time period of the band. The Giant for a Day demos are decent though so give this disc a little redeeming factor they are from Scraping the Barrel as usual.disc 5This is the best disc of the batch a few Civilian demos from scraping the barrel before a nearly complete representation of a Civilian show. now this "show" is actually 2 shows put together the first half is to my knowledge not officially released before this so it is the best reason to get this set, the second half was released on the last steps cd and is Gentle Giant's final show. I would have preferred if the show was entirely from the unreleased show but for all i know the tape wasn't complete or something. either way i love civilian shows they are full of energy and this is great to have on cd.So quite a mixed bag and a little frustrating but if you find it for a good price and do not have too many of the releases that it draws from it is a decent buy.

Not the long rumored tapes of Gentle Giant playing variations on a hit by Chicago, but interesting in its own way
I thought this was a 5CD box set was the long rumored release of Gentle Giant reminiscing about their favorite hit by the band Chicago, "Old Days", and playing variations on that song transposed for 12 tone serialism: The well-known Schoencheeseberger Days tapes that Gentle Giant recorded in the late '70s. It turns out that those tapes may have been destroyed in a fire, and what's here is all that remains from the same era. Kind of sad. But if you can live with that reality, then the assortment of live material and rehearsals that appears here might provide some solace.

Beware - many tracks sourced from MP3!
I absolutely love Gentle Giant, but this set was a letdown. Many tracks were previously available only as mp3s on a data disc in the "Scraping The Barrel" box set, and are touted here as being available on audio CD for the first time. So, better sound quality, right? Wrong. These tracks have inexplicably been mastered from those mp3s rather than from the source recordings. (The mp3 sourced tracks, according to auCDtect, are CD1 tracks 1-2, 4-5, 9, 11-15; all of CD2; CD3 tracks 1-3, 5-6; CD4 tracks 12-16; CD5 tracks 1-9.) Almost all of the rest can be found on prior commercial or "official bootleg" releases. The best-sounding thing here is the 1978 BBC Sight and Sound concert which has been officially released once on DVD and twice on CD. The 1977 Cleveland performance (previously "The Missing Face") is a pretty decent sounding audience recording. Most of the other live audience recordings here sound mediocre or worse. I got this set at a deep discount - under $10 including shipping from the U.K. to the U.S. - so I feel like I got my money's worth. If you've just discovered this band and don't already have most of this music, then depending on the price this might be a good purchase for you. I'd have given it 3 stars but for the deplorable decision to master so many tracks from mp3s instead of the source recordings.

Fantastic.... Gentle Giant
Gentle Giant is a band magic. For me it is the best band Prog Rock / Fusion of all time. This 5 CD box behind the delights of the material stored in the drawer all these years (special emphasis on the instrumental versions of old classics from the band) - Memories Of Old Days: A Compendium Of Curios, Bootlegs, Live Tracks, Rehearsals ... strongly recommendable for real you follow the Gentle Giant.

On Reflection、7. Proclamation、8. Free Hand は、1975年「 Endless Life 」から。16. Peel the Paint/I Lost My Head (Live in Sweden)が「 Artistically Cryme から。 Two Weeks in Spain から11. Mountain Time までが「 BBC Radio 1 Live in Concert 」のもので78年、音は大変素晴らしいです。 1. All Through the Night、2. It's Not Imagination It's Not Imagination Scraping the BarrelEndless LifeArtistically CrymeMissing FaceBBC Radio 1 Live in ConcertLast Steps

Blast from the past
I had old C90 tapes of the BBC Sight and Sound in Concert programmes from the late 70s. This was one of my favourites and when I lost the tapes I was gutted. This brought back memories of old days without doubt. Great music, underrated band. My 4-year-old daughter loves Two Weeks in Spain.
