From U2's The Unforgettable Fire to Emmylou Harris's Wrecking Ball, Lanois's distinct floating-in-the-clouds sound is instantly recognizable to even the most casual listener. Direct comparisons to master producer Brian Eno are not just obvious, they are inevitable; Lanois admits to being Eno's apprentice through the ambient master's instrumental projects in the '80s and '90s. After making a few singer/songwriter discs, Lanois says he decided to go fully instrumental on Belladonna to allow all listeners to "use their imagination and build their own scenario" rather than having the story handed to them. In that, he has succeeded. The focus here is unquestionably on the music--long, languid compositions built largely around pedal steel guitar. Unlike Lanois's previous discs, which included guest performers from Emmylou Harris to Willie Nelson to Bono, no famous friends appear here. Ethereal and mysterious.
I've read some very nasty reviews about Belladonna. Sometimes a person's unhappiness with life comes out in their reviews, which isn't a reflection of what they are reviewing. There are four tracks on this that I LOVE. Some others are too twangy for my taste, or have more beat than I like. I recognize that as no shortcoming on Mr. Lanois's part, but my own tastes. My four favorites are Sketches, Oaxaca, The Deadly Nightshade, and Todos Santos. Each is ethereal and mysterious. My only complaints are they are just too short, and I wish the rest of the tracks had a similar flavor.

Beautifully understated instrumental record.A more somber affair than I was expecting, given that I became interested in Daniel Lanois after hearing Sonho Dourado from the Friday Night Light's soundtrack, but that just made for a pleasant surprise.I will be playing this record for a long time.

Nette Instrumentalmusik, aber belanglos.
Lanois ist grandios, ob als Produzent oder als Musiker. Mein bisheriger Ansatz war: "Wo Lanois draufsteht, das kann man ungeprüft kaufen.". Beim Album "Belladonna" wurde ich jedoch erstmals etwas enttäuscht.Lanois knüpft hier offensichtlich an seine Zusammenarbeit mit Eno - speziell dem Album "Apollo - Soundtracks & Atmosheres" - an. Allerdings habe ich den Eindruck, hier nur einen lauwarmen, zweiten Aufguss von Apollo zu bekommen. Nette Instrumentalmusik, aber irgendwie belanglos. Bekannte Themen ohne Tiefe. Der Meister kopiert sich selbst und erreicht dieses mal nicht seine übliche Klasse...

The condition of the disc is excellent, as good as new. It arrived here well packaged and very quickly. I'm rather ambivalent about the musical content as it's all instrumental. Some pleasant tunes crying out for Daniel Lanois own special magic words sung as only he can.

Lanois hat es nicht nötig, sich irgendjemandem zu beweisen - er hat Eno, Dylan und U2 produziert und diesen verschiedenst gefärbten Künstlern seinen ureigenen Stempel aufgedrückt. Auch hat er wunderbare eigene Cds, wie "Acadie" und "For the Beauty of Wynona", herausgebracht.Hier hat er nun ein Album herausgebracht, das keinem kommerziellen Anspruch folgt, sondern bei dem sich der Künstler in seiner eigenen Art entfaltet - leider. Denn außer Songansätzen wird man auf diesem Album nicht viel finden, auch wenn sich Lanois gute und erprobte Musiker für die Produktion dazugehoölt hat.Dennoch bleiben die Stücke chillige Klangatmosphären, die ihr Potential verschleudern und einem das Gefühl geben, dass sich hier zwar jemand verwirklicht hat, aber nicht wirklich eine Message hat. Der Weg von der Beauty of Wynona ist somit zwar nicht weit, doch aus der einstigen Schönheit ist eine sehr eigene Art der Klangkomposititon geworden.

Der Meister hat wieder zugeschlagen
Daniel Lanois kennt man als Produzent zahlreicher wegweisender Alben, u.a. von Brian Eno oder Peter Gabriel.Nur wenige kennen aber auch seine überaus atmosphärischen, zeitlosen Soloalben.Waren die bisherigen Solo-Produktionen des Altmeisters immer schon extrem hochwertig, so übertrifft sein neustes Werk sogar noch seine Vorgängeralben. Noch nie hat er es geschafft, derart kompromisslos eine sehr spezielle, eigenartige Atmosphäre einzufangen und auf CD zu bringen.Für mich ein weiteres Meisterwerk, wenn nicht sogar das Beste, was ich je von Daniel Lanois gehört habe!
