NOVIIML Out For, Volume One Review: Emotionally Real and Side-Splittingly Funny - I have so much respect for the work of Alison Bechdel. As she developed over the years the characters of Mo and Sparrow and Lois and Sydney, et al, she fleshed them out as human beings. She's too hard on herself when she describes the ongoing story in Dykes to Watch Out For as "an unending Victorian novel" (I may be paraphrasing). The characters are too real, the emotions too genuine for only that. But I hasten to add, you'll laugh yourself silly--and cry sometimes. This volume contains the first several individual collections. The serial begins several dozen pages in. The stand-alone cartoons before that are good, if somewhat awkward: she was still clearly developing her style. Many of the early episodes of the ongoing serial were also a bit clumsy. But they just get better and better. I urge you to start at the beginning of the serial and read the whole thing. Review: Always Relevant - I feel as if Dykes to Watch Out For is the original L Word. Anything by Bechdel is worth reading. She's entertaining, yet poignant with her story lines. This book is a great insight into gay culture in the eighties, nineties, today, and the future i'm sure.

Excellent condition; great book!
I was pleasantly surprised that the book was in such good condition, considering its age. Alison Bechdel is one of my favorite graphic artists, and I was very glad to be able to buy this out -of-print classic!
