Eye-Popping video performance and feature rich
This is my first set-top BD player. I've been watching my BD movies on a PS3 or my PC. I sold my PS3 and I built a new desktop PC with Windows 8.1 in Jan 2015 and it won't play my Blu-rays natively without a program that costs about $40 or more if I want to watch 3D's as well. I decided to invest in a set-top player rather than use a PC program. I saw the Sony BDPS5200 with 3D (3D streaming from Netflix, etc. with 2D to 3D conversion too) and a ton of features that I probably won't use (mostly network features that my PC can access better using a keyboard and mouse). It up converts DVD's too but my Panasonic DVD player/recorder already does that. Mirroring might come in handy though. Using my Android tablet or phone as a remote looks to be promising, but I just want to watch Blu-rays. I have a Pink Floyd hybrid BD that I can finally watch too. I don't know about USB functionality (playing music, watching photos and videos) just yet but that's something that my PC also handles very well plus the audio output is much better and I can use my Bluetooth 5.1 surround speakers.I've watched just one BD so far and it was eye-popping. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay PT1 looked spectacular. Relying on my memory of the PS3 I have to say it's a visual improvement. I didn't do a side-by-side comparison (PS3 unavailable). I bought this BD player on sale for $69 and currently it's back to $89. So compare prices and you might get a better deal. Either way I highly recommend it if you can find it on sale or if you can use the tons of network features and other functionalities like 3D, USB, android apps, mirroring and DVD up converting. On the negative side it has a very slow startup time once you press the ON button (about 17 secs.) if you don't use the quick start feature found under the setup menu. But that uses more energy when the player is dormant. If you intend to use the player often and don't mind paying for a little more electrical usage then certainly use the quick start feature. However, it still takes about the same amount of time, 20 seconds or so, after pressing the BD-ROM enter button (center button in the triangle of buttons) for the movie to start or for the menu to ask if you want to resume play or not. So, basically it's a trade off since all you're saving is about a total of 15 seconds with less energy efficiency.BTW, I don't usually pay for extended warranties but I spent an extra $5, for peace of mind, on the 2 year warranty because some of the reviewers mentioned that their players stopped working or had problems after the initial warranty ended.

It has excellent picture quality
I wanted a simple Blu-ray player that is very inexpensive and can be used for streaming from Netflix or Amazon Prime over WiFi. This player fit the bill perfectly. This unit plays DVD's, Blu-ray disks, and 3D's. It is quick to start playing disks (a personal pet peeve). It has excellent picture quality. It has built in addresses for more services than I will ever use. However, the super low price dictates that the unit is definitely short on features. For instance, there is absolutely no displays on the player itself, i.e. no time of play or remaining. But if you want a good quality player for disks or streaming, this is a very good choice. I would buy this again; actually I did, this is my second one.

Issues with Internet connectivity, easy to resolve once you know what to do (Sony is useless)
The S5200 won't work with my automatic HDMI switch for some reason. I tried a variety of different HDMI cables and none of them worked properly with the switch. The display would flicker on and off repeatedly, or it wouldn't show anything on my TV (Samsung 60" LED HDTV). My Xbox 360, Amazon Fire TV Stick, and a wide variety of other HDMI devices all work properly with this switch, except for the S5200.Loading the web browser app takes forever, as does loading a BD-ROM for the first time. I noticed that when I went to watch the movie (even after a dozen factory resets of the device) a second time, the loading process was a lot faster. The other apps (such as Netflix) and Sony Entertainment Network wouldn't work properly. I found out through trial and error that there is a problem with the S5200 using default DNS addresses (such as my router's 10.0.0.1) even though my router is set to use Google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 DNS servers. I have to manually set the IPv4 DNS servers on the S5200 to Google's DNS servers (IP address is set to Auto, same with IPv6 settings). But before I can do all of this, I had to do a Factory Reset of all settings and then remove the personal info. I'd have to reboot the device and go through the Internet connection setup (remembering to set the DNS servers manually). Now, with the Internet connected, head over to Internet Video in any of the menu settings. The EULA agreement should show up. I found out that I had to wait awhile, or at least scroll through the EULA before clicking CONTINUE - otherwise it would say something about the Internet not being connected. If the DNS servers were not manually set to Google's, the next screen would not progress (it would say 1/3 indefinitely). If something went wrong during this step, I had to reset to factory defaults and remove all personal info and try again. There is a quick startup mode that basically puts the device on standby rather than full power-off. My power meter on the UPS doesn't show any kilo-watt consumption from the device with the Quick Startup mode, so I have to assume it doesn't use much power at all. There is a definite difference in startup time, on the order of instant-on versus a 30 second delay. The S5200 device itself is very compact and light, but the indicator LED isn't bright at all. The remote control is equally compact and lightweight. The only noise the S5200 makes is the disc motor. The S5200 does come with an owner's manual, but it is very lightweight and high-level. The online version is the same, except it is just a PDF file. The manual is totally useless, but luckily the S5200's user interface isn't too hard to use. Again, the problem with connectivity was due to having to manually set the DNS addresses. None of my other devices exhibited this issue, as they all run fine with the router's defaults (my router is set to use Google's DNS servers). The S5200 is the first device that was being extremely difficult. The interesting part is that with the default internet settings, I was able to update the firmware on the S5200 and access the web browser. The manual DNS server settings were required only for the online apps (such as Sony Entertainment Network, Netflix, Pandora, etc...) Sony's websites/support forums would have you believe that you need to manually change the DNS due to "high traffic" on your ISP's servers, which is untrue! I did not try a WiFi connection, as I have issues with WiFi connectivity in the living room especially with streaming large movies. I always try to use Ethernet for media streaming. The HD upscaling for my DVDs is phenomenal, and watching Blu-ray movies in 1080P was a welcome change from watching Standard Def DVDs on my circa-2005 Sony DVD player. Now that 4K/UHD is starting to pick up steam, I suppose I can grab another 5 years from the S5200 watching Blu-ray movies.Overall: 4/5 stars, Internet connectivity setup was horrendous - not for the average user. It also requires better documentation.
