Question 1

Reviews about pattern are conflicting, so assuming there are 2 versions sold randomly. Wondering about chances of receiving either. Oval or zig-zag?

The laser is on a rotating turntable and is reflected off a mirror that is adjustable by maybe 15-20 degrees.  If and when the turntable makes a full rotation it's an oval pattern, but more often the turntable will turn clockwise, say, 20 degrees, then counterclockwise 30 degrees, then 10, then 5, then 5, then 10, then 180 degrees which gives it the zig-zag pattern.  This is also affected by whether you have the Bolt elevated (we usually put it on a stool) and whether it projects just onto the floor or also on furniture or even the walls.  All that said this is the best laser pointer thingy we've come across.  We got it because our friends had one for their cat, and they got it because their friends had one for their cats, etc.  Seriously, it's that awesome.

Question 2

Does this one make a loud noise like the Dart?

I don't consider it too loud, it sounds like a little motor running.  The cats were afraid for only a second and then were too engrossed in the laser to care.  Now when I turn it on and they hear the motor they run from wherever they are to chase it.

Question 3

It is making a  noise and the light is moving about but no light is coming out, is this thing broken?

If you look inside the opening you should see a laser moving about each time you hear the noise. If you cannot see a laser in the piece that's moving then yes it it broken
