Interconnected for both wired and wireless.
Purchased this to add to my existing interconnected hardwired system for the purpose of adding a totally wireless one to a additional room. Called Kidde MFR and the told be this would not work. I read the manual online and it said it would. So I gave it a shot.Steps:1. Purchased hardwire/wireless interconnect Kidde and a wireless interconnect Kidde smoke alarms.2. Set the dip switchs on both devices so they will communicate. MFR recommends do not use default3. Installed batteries in both devices.4. Installed hardwire/wireless. SInce I already had Kidde' install I did not need to replace the harness. Simply plug in.5. Installed wireless in additional room. See your local code for where to place the alarm and how far from the wall or ceiling.6. Tested the system from the wireless, then the hardwire/wireless, then from current installed alarms in other locations and all alarms went off as aspected. Conclusion: It works works if you want to expand to another room with interconnection function on a current hardwire system.Only warning per the MFR is do not install two hardwire/wireless interconnection on the same circuit otherwise it will be a continual loop of never ending beeping.

Good !!
Let's get this out of the way first. This is not what you'd consider inexpensive. If you want wireless interconnect you will pay more. My project was to replace a single hardwired smoke detector in my house ( that was code when my house was built ). THEN add 5 battery operated ones to interconnect with this new hardwired one. The battery interconnected ones are legal in California on an existing house. New construction requires all hardwired and interconnected. This is a bargain considering the alternative which is:: Cut 5 electrical boxes into my ceiling then stringing 14-3 romex to the boxes etc. It is hot now and a younger person may have fun doing this. I would have a few years ago.. Also if you are thinking hardwired saves having to think about battery replacement; not so ; the hardwired have battery back-up and so you're still changing batteries ! The all battery model requires only 2 small holes in the ceiling using plastic anchors and if you use hardwired ones you have to cut in an 2"x4" electric box. (I just don't like making extra holes in my house!!) All is up and running ,looks good, works good.

I can finally sleep soundly
Purchased 7 of these wireless models and 2 hardwired models (Kidde RF-SM-ACDC) to replace the 11-year old smoke detectors in the house. After quickly setting the DIP switches in each unit to a common (custom) setting, they mounted in 2 seconds with the provided screws. Pressed the 'test' button on one unit, and all 9 went off perfectly. Mine are scattered pretty evenly throughout the house and between all 3 floors - there doesn't seem to be any communication problems at all (1990's standard timber frame construction house). There is a tamper resistant feature that locks the smoke detector into the base ring and makes it very difficult to get them off to replace the battery...I would recommend you do as I did...break the little tab that engages into the locking feature so that you're not frustrated next year as you curse and struggle to get a chirping smoke detector off of the ceiling to replace the batteries!

Prepare for unplanned fire alarm "drills" aka false alarms
If you are like me and enjoy waking up to the sound of alarms going off in the middle of the night with all the excitement of getting yourself and your kids down stairs for non existent fires. Or perhaps you have in laws that you'd like to give a loving gift that keeps on giving. If either of these scenarios sounds like a winner to you then buy this item. It has not let us down since we made the lucked our way into owning these. In fact, not being let down is an understatement these things have went off multiple times per week since we've had the pleasure of calling them ours. Each alarm draws the youngest of the young ones down stairs yelling fire. Although the volume of her yells have gotten softer and the seriousness that she takes the unplanned fire drills has decreased each false alarm we hope she still takes it serious if we ever have a real fire.On a serious note - do not buy these. We have seen our kids and ourselves become desensitized to our fire alarms because of these. Regardless of the time they go off we all assume it is just another false alarm. Do not buy these.

Really good for the price. Testing is a bit of a pain though
These wireless interconnected alarms probably work too well, I have a mixed set of alarms in my house: three not interconnected and three interconnected. They work great, but I think you probably have to install the interconnected ones after the non interconnected ones, as I tried to do it the other way around, and the interconnected ones I bought went off for no reason. But after installation, they've not gone off randomly (as some people have experienced). You do have to hush all of them when only one is triggered, which makes it kind of a pain to test, or if it were to go off due to a toaster or something. Otherwise, they're awesome for the price you pay!
