I measured the inside and found it to be:9 1/2" tall, by 8" deep, by 12" wideAdditionally, the recess in the lid is 2"tall by 8" deep, by 12" wide.All told, the cubic inches are 1104 and cubic footage would be 0.639You can stand a 3-ring binder upright or on it's side.

Can this fit legal-paper sized documents?

No, it isn't wide enough. It only will fit regular size file folders (for 8.5 x 11" documents).

the opening is 8" x 12" wide, with a ridge that holds a hanging folder just off the bottom, about 9" hanging depth. there is a little head room so the folder tabs will clear the top when closed.
