Fixed My Problem
It's always a terrible feeling when you press the garage door opener button, only to watch the door slowly chug for a moment, then just stop and suddenly there's a strange grinding noise coming from the opener itself. This was my experience the other night at 3 in the morning while taking a dog outside. The next morning I got up and inspected the machine, only to find that the motor drive gear was basically eaten away to nothing. The worm gear was still fine. I figured I would need a new opener, so I went inside and started looking at new openers and how much it would cost to get one installed. I figured I could install it myself, but with it about 20 degrees inside the garage, I wasn't interested in working out there for any more than a few minutes. I ended up finding some videos that showed how to replace the gear.I ended up buying a gear set from Sears's website. I paid the eighteen dollars for "expedited" shipping. It said it would arrive the following day. The following day, when it hadn't even been shipped yet, I called them and was told, basically, that the estimate online is just an estimate and not very accurate. I should receive my gears in 4-5 business days.Well, that wasn't really acceptable, so I looked around and found the one gear I needed here on Amazon. I wish I had looked here first. Less than ten bucks later I had the gear and overnight shipping to my door. Luckily, the set from Sears can be returned, and I'll be doing that. The gear from Amazon, the one for this review, is the exact same thing as what was on there...only without all of it's teeth shredded. I was able to get the old gear out and the new gear in place in about a total of 40 minutes. The hardest part for me was finding a way to remove one of the pins from the drive shaft so that I could pull the gear off. Once I devised a method to do this, it was smooth sailing. The gear installed easily, and works flawlessly. It's quieter now than it was, so I can only assume that the gear has been going bad for a while.A quick note, when you put this in, make sure you adjust the up and down limits on the garage door opener itself. Mine was set WAY too low, and I'm assuming that's what led to the destruction of the old gear. Once I got them set correctly, the thing works like new!!Highly recommended!!

Perfect replacement part
I've been on a DIY kick lately, researching fixes for various things around my home. When I came home recently and my garage door got stuck half-way up, I knew I could either pay a hundred bucks for a repair tech to come out or crack open my door opener and troubleshoot it myself. I have a 1996 Chamberlain 1/2 horse opener, and when I opened the case, I discovered what looked like a bunch of white dust inside the metal housing. Upon further inspection, and researching on the Internet and YouTube, the existing nylon gear (that matches this) had worn out. It's a common occurrence. I followed some YouTube videos and took out the gear assembly through the top of the opener (rather than taking the whole opener down). I had difficulty taking the old gear off, and ended up cutting the gear off in chunks using my oscillating saw. Tip to the less-equipped handyman like myself -- get a metal nail-set or a pin-punch. I didn't have one, and getting the pin out that holds this gear in place is CRUCIAL. Gave up after a half hour of swearing in a cold garage before I ran out and got one. Once I put this gear in place and replaced the pin holding it in, I greased the teeth LIBERALLY with petroleum jelly. They recommend lubing the teeth with gear grease, but most recommendations say Vaseline will do the trick too. This helps with longevity of the gear. Put everything back together and boom -- garage door works like new. This part seems to be -- of course -- the ONE part no home center stocks, but it also seems to be the one that fails most. Nice knowing I could order this on Amazon for a few bucks and save money on a garage door repair service.

Drive Gear for Chamberlain Openers 1984-Current
This part fixed the problem nicely, and was very inexpensive. It wore in against the existing worm gear a little and some plastic shavings were falling off of it, but that's either because the worm gear was old, or my shaft my be slightly bent. The shaving stopped occurring after just a few runs of the opener, and the opener functions just fine. This gear is made out of the EXACT SAME MATERIAL as the original one's from the manufacturer so if it wears out right away on you, that's an indication that you have OTHER ISSUES with your opener, such as a bent shaft or worn out worm gear, and has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the quality of this drive gear, as other people who've purchased this part seem to think! Run your opener and watch the sprocket that the chain rides on and look for any slight "wavering". That will cause the drive gear to wear faster. I've since ordered the replacement kit with a new shaft, just to have on hand in case my existing shaft is slightly bent, or if the old worm gear causes the new drive gear to wear out too soon. So far, I have no need to install the whole kit as this new drive gear is working perfectly. It wasn't hard to change out, and it works just fine.
