John Henry: An American Legend (Knopf Children's Paperbacks)

Worth reading but a little lukewarm
Tells the factual story of John Henry well, but I was expecting something a little more from Ezra Jack Keats, whose books about African American boys in the city have been with me for 40 years and now enchant my son. This is a good book for a person with normal politics -I just wanted something more militant re the politics surrounding John Henry's life and death and famous battle with the mechanization of his work.

A classic
This was my favorite tall tale when I was a kid. I got it for my kid and he loves it, too. The art is unique and beautiful. The story is timeless.

Important, timeless story
Loved this story growing up. It seems longer than the version I remember, which is great. My son now loves it. A wonderful story about selflessness and determination for the good of the whole.

Great pictures. Compelling reading
Bought as a "read to" book for our four year old grandson. Great pictures. Compelling reading. (Hated to lose John Henry in the end.)
