Stanley drew these comics as a journeyman on the stories. He tended toward absurdist punch lines, but also mimicked the logic of children very well. Stanley's work is incredibly fresh and funny half a century later. Pudgy, irritable, and always trying to find ways to have fun, Sluggo and Nancy's high jinks are laugh-a-minute. More Nancy and Sluggo in Comic Book Form (John Stanley Style)
I haven't been loving Drawn & Quarterly's reprints of John Stanley's work on Ernie Bushmiller's Nancy, but they are often entertaining and show sparks of Stanley's imagination from his classic Lulu days. This volume, like the others, focuses on secondary characters like rich kid Rollo Haveall, strange Oona Goosepimple and bully Spike. I like the varying length of the stories in this volume and enjoyed most the tales that were somewhat fantastical. I wish D&Q would reprint the remaining Stanley Nancy and Sluggo stories.

Letdown
Apparently ‘John Stanley’ is well-regarded by some, but his work here with these Nancy comics is boring. All I could think was ‘I wish Ernie Bushmiller wrote these. The lack of color and image correction make this hard to look at as well.
