They are about 3" long, 1-1/2" wide and about 1/4" thick. They are on the light side but work beautifully. Are very decorative.

Can a rain chain be installed at a valley without a gutter?

Only if you are able to somehow channel the water onto the chain OR hand the chain in such a fashion that it will receive the water as it is exiting the valley. You may have to fashion a custom solution if this cannot be done the way I've described. Best of luck!

What keeps the chain from whipping around in the wind?

The chains simply do not have as much wind resistance as you might expect. They stay remarkably still in wind, to a point. Obviously in super high wind storm conditions, this might change. But in normal circumstances, the amount of wind-induced swaying is very minimal. Some will attach the chain at the bottom, which can prevent any unwanted swinging in the wind, but most do not find this step necessary. But it is an option.

It will come with it's own hook, which you can hang it from with no additional hardware needed. But some choose to also buy a gutter installer, which is sold separately.
