Expensive but worth it
This is a beautifully made tool. The etchings are clear and precise. Easy movement and locking. A great tool if you need it.

This thing is getting 5 star ratings for a reason... It's Awesome.
Great tool. It was expensive, but buying it was one of the best decisions I made with my last project (Installing expensive insulated siding on a house). Saved me a ton of time and money from wasted materials. Be aware that the "finger roll" lock can get locked up if you fix it in place and then pull the arms (tips) apart. That's user error, but the leverage you get by pulling the arms apart can make it almost impossible to undo by turning the roller with you fingers. Avoid doing that, but if you do, try squeezing it back together the same way you pulled it apart.

Beautifully made...
Worth every penny. Not only is the instrument itself beautifully made, but it come in a sturdy case. Plus, there is a guide to rafter layout included. The only flaw is that locking mechanism can be difficult to set, in some positions, and is prone to loosening. You need to be very careful about tossing it in your tool pouch, as it be easily knocked from the set position.

How did I survive without this?
This tool is incredible! I had to build a complicated set of outdoor stairs this summer (an "L" shape around a corner of our house from a deck on the lower portion to an upstairs balcony (both platforms I also built) and this made the job so much easier. I am actually pretty proficient at building (I designed and built my own house) but generally a regular carpenter's square or speed square was my only tool for marking cuts, figuring angles and checking for square. Those work, but they have limitations and aren't nearly as fool-proof as this. I really love the heft of this, the accuracy and even the handy little pouch (plus pencil and how-to booklet) it comes with. It costs quite a bit--the only thing which made me hesitate before buying--but it was totally worth every penny on just that one job this summer. I am absolutely sure this tool will be with me for life. It is sturdy, well made and accurate to a fault. I don't regret a single thing about this purchase. Believe me, it's worth every penny!

Best 70$ I ever spent
I'm sure most carpenters think just like I do when they see a speed square with a 70$ price tag on it. For a speed square you kidding me nothanks. And I'm sure most out there end up buying the cheap plastic madeVersion of this product like I sure did. I paid 20$ for this speed square made of plastic and fell in love with what it does as a square. And right after I was in love with this style of speed square and could never go back to a standard locked position speed square of course you know it the cheap plastic square broke on me. I was very hesitant to pull the trigger on buying a 70$ speed square. Even after I had it and started using it at work daily I feared I was a idiot for buying a 70$ speed square. But if I had to get a new one now knowing what I know I would spend well over 100$ if I had to there is no going back to a standard locked position speed square for me now. And always say best 70$ I ever spent like a idiot on a tool. I use it to find the pich of roofs the angle of anything I'm facing and all the jobs it normally does as a speed square. It has also replaced my torpedo level without me realizing it just thought I never get me 9" level out of my tool bag anymore since this speed square is fully capable of doing any thing I needed my torpedo level for and I really never use my 12" speed square as well. So this tool does not only do the job of my smaller speed square and way more with it's features my old fixed position square doesn't have. It's features help to also replace two other tools out of my tool bag. And I'm sure has done the same for almost anyone that has enjoyed having one. One of my most used and must have tool I have ever owned in my 25 years of carpentry

Square Deal
Quality construction; heavy duty; machined aluminum-not plastic; all markings & numerals are etched in body not painted on. Built in holes for temporary screw/nail mounting for craftsmen who are working alone on a project. Angle markings are as accurate as Starrett protractor head and easier to read. Built-in levels make finding existing stair/roof pitch easy.Carrying case: Two ply; pockets for pencil(s) & Instruction manual, which, btw, appears to have water-resistant coating. Rafter tables in the back pages; case also has belt clip and 3" wide belt loop. Recommended.

Could Have Been a Great Tool
I love the functionality of the square. The problem lies with the locking mechanism on some of the squares produced. As other reviews have stated, the lock does not hold the square in place. That is really unfortunate, because the square could have been the perfect tool for a lot of jobs. Sixty dollars is a lot of money to spend for a tool that you can't depend on staying where you lock it.I'm sure that the manufacturer is aware of the issue after several have had the same problem. I realize that in mass production, items get through quality control defective. I returned the defective square that I purchased and received a replacement that serves me well.

Could be revolutionary. better design and precision machining and itd be perfect
when fully extended the bubbles on the top and bottom dont match. i think its a space inside the pivot. better labeling and angle selector indicator design. whole new lock system nobody wants to screw nothin by hand make it a spring loaded switch or something
