Howard Miller Clock
This is a beautiful clock. I was concerned about how the clock would be shipped. It arrived without a scratch, tightly packaged and in perfect condition. The clock has many features: chimes at the quarter or hour, volume control, night switch off, and plays Ave Maria or Westminster chimes. Nice to know that Howard Miller still makes such beautiful products. Highly recommend this beautiful clock.

This was a great purchase - beautiful mantle clock
This is a lovely mantle clock, easy to operate, and has options that will work for most everyone. The design is clean and simple with quality woodworking that will go with most any decor. The chiming system is fool proof (provided you thoroughly read the directions). Three chiming sound options, or you can simply turn the chime off altogether. It has a volume control so you can adjust the chime to your level of comfort. I also have a Howard Miller grandfather clock, and the chime on this - although digital - sounds comparable to the grandfather clock. And best of all, it keeps accurate time. I couldn't be more pleased, this was exactly what I wanted for the mantle.

Pendulum HIDDEN in FOAM taped to inside of box side - Pretty
For the price I expected the entire pendulum to be metal, the disk sounds and feels like plastic but may be extremely thin metal that has a lose black plastic back that makes it seem and sound all plastic. It is covered with a thin film of saran wrap like material. I was trying to figure out why the edges seemed rough and there is nothing in the instructions stating there is a film covering or to remove this film. Overall it is very pleasing to the eye. It has a solid wood frame with ornate gold trim on the glass front. The minute hand is very thin so viewing from across a large room may be difficult for some with low vision. However, most low vision people will usually notice the chimes and be fairly close to knowing the time just from chimes. Hubby and I both like the sound. It does resonate a little long but so does our existing mantle clock so I'm not sure what the another reviewer means by the tinny sound. Our 2 clocks sound extremely similar. I love that I can adjust the volume. Hubby likes that the clock can be muted for evenings. We inherited a mid-century German wind up mantle clock (no pendulum) that is extremely loud but the quality of the clock is much, much nicer. (Just don't care for design). Thus saying, when I write this review it is in relation to the clock we own vs this new Stafford Mantle clock 635-169.WARNING this box was labeled for delivery in a Howard Miller box but looked as if Amazon repackaged just to have their labeled box, or possibly because the Howard Miller box had a gouged hole on the top and one dented place on the side and Amazon re-packaged. Amazon did NOT put any fragile/glass/handle with care warning on the Amazon box. Howard Miller's box clearly states "GLASS HANDLE WITH CARE". I saw Amazon drive up; so I went to greet them before they could block door with the package and I would not be able to open door without knocking it off the step. (As they do with all my packages) As the Amazon lady approached my sidewalk, she DELIBERATELY let go and let the box drop at least 2.5-3ft (.75-1m) to the ground while she checked her clipboard. I gasped in horror, ran toward her, and I screamed, " REALLY! THAT'S A $400 CLOCK!" (Really $350 with taxes). Her response was meekly, "oh", and she walked off. No apology, nothing. DO NOT LET AMAZON DELIVER YOUR FRAGILE ITEMS UNLESS THEY ARE DEFINITELY RETURNABLE AND THEN LET COMPANY KNOW THAT ITS PROBABLY AMAZON'S or DELIVERER'S FAULT IT ARRIVED BROKEN. I do NOT take stars off for ineptness of delivery. (That would be -5) This mantel clock was packaged extremely well by Howard Miller. It was also labeled GLASS HANDLE WITH CARE. I am hoping that with Howard Miller's packaging that the clock will be all right. It would really be helpful if Howard Miller included a LARGE insert INSIDE ON TOP of the product: BEFORE DISCARDING BOX: REMOVE PENDULUM FROM FOAM WRAP ON SIDEWALL OF BOX. One reviewer had warned about that but it had been nearly 2 weeks since I read the review. I had unwrapped and inspected for outward damage and then set the clock aside. Next day while I was out of the room, hubby was gathering trash for the outside bin for pick up when I heard him and I asked him to keep box until I actually got the clock set up and running. It was a good thing; with time passed from reading, to ordering, to delivery, to actually putting it together I forgot viewers advice. Also, for those who have never owned a clock with this type back it would be very helpful to include instructions on how to removed the back i.e. INSERT FINGERS INTO HOLES, LIFT UP GENTLY TIL THE BOTTOM IS CLEAR AND PULL THE BOTTOM FORWARD FOR REMOVAL. My German clock has a tiny twist handle. I had never seen a clock like this. I had no clue. Now, another customer said the pendulum moved too quickly. I watched and noticed my pendulum takes a full swing right AND left for a full second. It matched the tick tock of my German mantel clock. If memory serves me, the grandfather clocks in the Henry Ford Museum 50 years ago did one full second on the tick and one full second on the tock and their pendulum is much much longer. This mantel clock has short pendulum so it does double time. If it is an aesthetic problem, just get a mantle clock without the pendulum.Truth, if I had been able to physically go and look in a clock shop (pandemic) I might have bought one from a cheaper company. Most cheaper clocks did not come with all these options, but a few did. This clock has a plastic cased quartz mechanism. You cannot see inside, so, for all I know, it is no different than cheaper clocks. I had a glass dome anniversary clock for 41 years and it finally bit the dust. It was a cheap one from Service Merchandise in 1978. Howard Miller only warranties this Stafford product for 1 year. Exactly what the cheaper ones offer. So why pay more? Maybe, it is better. If it is, I don't think I will live to100+ to find out. Besides, will they still be making C batteries in 40-50 years. I was aware that it took C batteries before I ordered, so that's on me. I could not afford a wind up version or the dreamed of grandfather clock. I will have to settle for the inherited mid century modern German clock for the wind up mechanism. (Just not as pretty)Would I buy again? I don't know. It's little pricey for just a quartz. It is a Howard Miller.

Nice Clock
This is a very nice clock. Beautiful design and craftmanship. It keeps time and the chimes are nice as well. The only problem I've had with it is the ability to see or read the time from a distance. We've placed it on our fireplace mantel in the living room. The living room is fairly open. If I'm more than 10 feet away from the clock it becomes difficult to read the time. The response from Howard Miller customer service was get closer to the clock or return it. I'm currently considering returning the clock. I'm looking at the Howard Miller Allegheny Wall Clock (625759) which although is a 'wall' clock, the base is only .25" shorter on the base depth.

Great replacement for a mechanical clock with Westminster chime.
This is a well-built and very accurate clock that we purchased as a Christmas gift to replace a loud and poorly built one. The clock has kept amazing time and the volume control/nighttime chime shutoff is awesome. The clock it replaced could be heard down the street and clanged every 15 minutes/24 hours a day! This is a solid and very handsome clock.

Can't Go Wrong with this Lovely Clock
Absolutely beautiful clock. Natural wood. Someone said the chimes sound cheap / bad, but I can't tell any difference from my wind-up actual chime clock that I've owned for 30 years (and this one has so many additional features). Warning! Don't mistakenly throw your pendulum away! It's taped to the side of the box and you can hardly see it. Also, to open the back, there' a small piece of thin foamy material that has to be taken off: I had to use needle-nosed pliers. This might sound stupid, but if your clock doesn't work, even though you've put in unused batteries, they could nevertheless be dead. (How often to we use "C" batteries?!) I bought mine years ago and that was the case for me. Hope this helps.

Very nice mantle clock!
Looks great on the mantle. Nice wood and finish. At first I had it set to sound off every quarter hour and it was driving both my husband and me batty. Then I switched it to only chime on the hour (and turned the volume down), and now it's very pleasant to hear. I also enjoy the swinging of the pendulum. It's not too fast, and it's totally silent.

Made in China 🙃
Clock is chiming 3 minutes before each quarter hour. Tried to troubleshoot, reached out to them for help and link no longer available?? I think overpriced by a couple hundred..most likely return.
