Plant-Based Solution

Glad I read this book
I've read a few low carb high fat diet books and they mention if you eat the right fats you won't get heart disease. This author contradicts what these books say and he is a heart specialist. He says people who follow low carb, high fat diets increase their risk of getting heart disease. Tried to follow a low carb high fat diet, but was unable to stay on it for any extended time as I always craved carbs on these diets. Recently read Proteinaholic written by a gastric bypass surgeon who sees thousands of patients trying to lose weight and he states that none of his patients who followed low carb diets were able to stay on this diet long term. He now recommends reduced meat, egg and dairy consumption with lots of healthy whole grains, fruits and vegetables or to go vegan to lose weight. Also recently read the Mayo Clinic Diabetic Diet and they mentioned that people couldn't follow a low carb diet long term. The Mayo Clinic Diabetic Diet also limits protein consumption from meat, eggs and dairy, and limits consumption of complex carbs (definitely not low carb though), and limits fat intake. It doesn't count fruit as a carb and recommends three or more servings of fruit a day and four or more servings of nonstarchy vegetables a day. I've lost ten pounds on this diet and actually enjoy being on this diet as the fruit and nonstarchy vegetables keep me full. Glad I am no longer fooled by the advocates of a low carb, high fat diet. Vegan, vegetarian and/or diets with reduced consumption of meat, eggs, and dairy with consumption of healthy whole grains, fruit and vegetables sound like it is the way to eat and live longer. Glad I found all these books recently, especially the Mayo Clinic Diabetic Diet. I really like this diet.

A Compelling Argument for a Plant-Based Diet Beyond Ethics
A book I really think all adults should read. Its short and to the point and provides great information about the health benefits of a plant based diet. In a world where the argument for going plant-based is almost always about ethics and compassion (there's nothing wrong with this, I went vegan for the animals and not because I thought it would turn me into superman) so many people who are curious to take the leap ultimately fail out of fear that it isn't sustainable for our health, Kahn dispells that handily in this book.Whether you are vegan or not, or ever plan to be this is a great book about diet, the human heart, and our current relationship with food. You may still not want to give up your animal products after reading but you'll without a doubt finally understand why your mother always told you to eat your damn vegetables.

Great advice for people who want to prevent dying of heart disease at a young age
Easy to read and understand. Brings up some important blood tests that you should get done but that the family practitioner does not usually order. I took the blood tests the author recommends and found out that I have, due to genetics, extremely high Lipoprotein a (LP(a)) - no wonder most of my ancestors died of heart & cardiovascular diseases (strokes, heart attacks, atherosclerosis etc).I have changed my diet following Dr. Kahn's recommendations and I've followed his suggestions regarding other blood tests and scans. As a consequence my blood pressure and LDL cholesterol are much improved. I am happy to report that my coronary artery calcification scan resulted in a perfect ZERO, no calcification at all! Bottom line, if you are willing to follow the diet and blood test advice of Dr. Kahn, then you will see improvements to your health.

Highly recommend.
Awesome information that’s well-written and backed by science. Includes lots of jaw-dropping outcomes from research studies. Thank you, Dr. Kahn. I am so glad I found this (Rich Roll podcast recommendation). I haven’t read a full book in three years...read this one in a weekend! I couldn’t put it down. I transitioned my family to whole food plant-based eating in early 2020, including our toddler. I have lost over 30 lbs and feel amazing. We have all noticed glowing skin, better sleep, more energy. My parents (mid 60s) have met with the same results. Highly recommend this book for its quality content and how easy it makes getting started on the WFPB journey. Don’t wait.

Packed with information.
I just finished reading this book. I cannot believe all of the helpful, medical information on the power of a WFPB diet. I want to share this book with all of my friends. I am on a journey to better health. No more meds and a lot less weight. This is a great addition to my health promotion library. This is a book that I will read over and over again. I underline and take notes in my books. I can't wait to go back to find information that I may have missed.

Good book, but could have stopped reading half way through and still gotten the main point.
Good book with lots of statistical evidence and studies cited. Lots of recommendations not just with recipes, but also on how to make your change in diet stick and make it a lifestyle. Tons of recommended foods and recipes.

Easy reading book that is an introduction to a whole food plant based diet.
The author writes in an easily understood manner, describing the merits of a whole food plant based diet from a few different perspectives. This is a great book if you are new to the idea of a vegan diet, but would like more information as to why you should pursue one — for your own health, for the health of the planet, or for a desire that animals not be senselessly harmed. Joel Kahn is an expert in the field and has a broad grasp of the topic. The book is compelling and easy to understand. He includes a 21 day meal plan that is easy to follow and provides tasty recipes for families and those that need a bit of help in the area of actually preparing meals without meat and dairy. This is a great book!

The Best Plant Based Cookbook I've Found
After hearing Dr. Kahn on the Rich Roll Podcast, I immediately purchased his book. As I worked through the book I also worked through the recipes in the back. The book itself was thorough and practical. I appreciate Dr. Kahn's evidence based approach to nutrition, and as I read I was excited and empowered to try his recipes. Though not in the order he suggests, I made every single recipe in the book including the few bonus recipes. Out of 60+ recipes, there were only 2 that I personally wouldn't make again. If you are looking for easy plant based recipes that taste excellent, this is the book for you. You won't find too many ingredients and you can find most of the ingredients used at your local grocery store. Thank you Dr. Kahn.

Very medical and hard to read
I have enjoyed this book at the beginning although it was very dry for me. Quickly went through chapters I was interested in. I guess if you want something very professional and medical read with lots of data... then it's for you. If you want to understand more about the vegan diet and how it can affect your health I'd choose some other books.
