Use a small cross head screwdriver to remove the 6 screws on the back. You can then separate front from back and access the batteries

It supports power supply by AA battery, so you can install 4 AA battery in it, then set it in your car, no need to use your car battery.

Q: Can you leave it in place when you drive the car?

Yes, you can leave it in when you drive the car, and it will auto standby when the car is running

Q: After installation in your car, can you change the batteries in place or must you take it out of the car to access them?

I did not fasten the unit down in the vehicle so I am able to simply lift it to change the batteries.
