Proprietary fittings mean they can charge whatever they want. Monopolistic pricing to capitalize on return. When the patient runs out they may get cheaper if there is enough demand for competitors to bring less expensive alternatives to market.

You never actually remove the cork, so the wine stays preserved for a long time.
