The media could not be loaded. These seem easy enough to make so I thought about making one myself but finding bamboo turned out to be harder than I thought in New England. There are likely better versions than this one but for the money this one has worked out really well. I decided I wanted to use a solar pump so I swapped out the included pump for a solar powered pump. My first install didn’t work as the catch basin was too small and the water level fell too fast. I ended up getting a 20”x32” x 9” high tub and burying it, putting a grate on top in which I cut a “door” so I could access the pump if I needed, and then I sat the whole rocker base on two Pieces of bamboo garden stake across the tub so that any water dripping down the fountain came back into the catch basin. I then covered the grate with smooth round stones and did a perimeter of larger rocks to contain the smaller stones and keep dirt from getting into the grate. So far it works great. We had to cover one square of the solar panel to get the pump to give just the right flow. The sound is probably the weaker point of this fountain—it’s a little blunt without the hollow sound you would get from a larger version that has a longer tube with more bamboo sections. But we didn’t want something too big and decided it was a pretty small difference. Some reviewers talk about the bamboo getting water-logged. Haven’t experienced that yet but it’s only been a few weeks....one year later, just reinstalled it after putting the pump and fountain away for the winter. Still working great.….now 2023, so it’s been through 4 seasons. Still a great rocker fountain. I do take it out and put it away each winter so I’m sure that helps sustain it. It’s looking a little weathered and there are some external cracks in the surface of the rocket but they don’t go through to the inside so there are no leaks. Given the price I paid back in 2020 this was a no brainer and has worked out great. Would definitely buy again.

The media could not be loaded. I’ve had this two years. This is what I’ve learned. This is a well made device. It’s made of real bamboo and worked fine the first year. The balance got off the second year and I ended up hanging a weight from the front twisted wire. BTW, this wire is to prevent water dripping down the pour spout.After removing the device for the winter(highly recommended) I noticed a crack between the first and second node which was allowing water to unbalance the device.I just finished sealing the crack with epoxy and sealing the entire device with outdoor varnish (Valspar).From now on I will remove the device every winter. Allow it to dry out. Then I will seal it every spring with Varnish. I see no reason this wouldn’t allow it to last many, many years.BTW, I bought another Shishi Odoshi from here. It was made of painted plastic. It looks man made and never functioned properly. I returned it.

Love the fountain, however, after 4.5 months of use the tubing within the bamboo is has developed small holes or cracks without a way to replace damaged tubing. Contacted seller today 11/21 let’s see what happens.

The balance is off. The dropping tube it's supposed to touch down before coming back up. The sound it makes when touching the lower bamboo pole it's part of the calming effect these Japanese fountains have, and this design missed it. I had to top the lower piece with rocks to give a zen effect for the bamboo to touch down and make the desired sound.Also, the solar pump it's so weak that if the minimum shade falls on a tiny part of the solar panel it would stop working. I had to buy a real pump to replace it and after paying for all that it doesn’t work because it’s all swollen and rotten. Money to trash.

The build of my fountain seems wrong. The drip catch thats supposed to work does not seem to be doing it’s job and the water is spilling off the chute and onto the base. I’m very disappointed with the quality of this fountain given the price I paid for it.

When I set the fountain up in my pond my expectation was a hollow clunking sound. It made no such sound. Not easily discouraged and with available power tools/ resources, I attatched a bamboo wind chime where the piece that was struck by the rocker was sopposed to go. It now makes an authentisc japanese rocking fountain sound. For those who might want btter sound quality you will need is a drill,80 grit sand paper, cheap bamboo wind chimes preferably 2" in dimeter, a 5/8" forester bit, and some electrical tape. Carefully drill a hole in the side of the chime opposite of the toungue. Make sure that sure that you drill the hole away from the closed end so the chime will resonate, but make sure the chime will fit in the space you want to display it in BEFORE YOU DRILL THE HOLE. After the hole is drilled sand the hole a little bit at a time until it fits snugly on the peg behind the rocker platform where it will be struck. Next wrap the electrical tape around the peg just enough to elevate the chime, but not enough to impede the rocker( You will want the fountain running while adjusting the chime). That should leave you with a nice more relaxing sound.Enjoy!

Looks GREAT with my other bamboo features and functions well (quality). The sound has added a new dimension to the environment. I have added it to my fish/koi pond and fountain features. Thanks
