I want to buy one for my wife, but she doesn't have a smart phone. Would it work at all? Or would it work via my smart phone?

I am not 100% sure, but what the smart phone does is that if you download the Mi Fit app, then you can sync the fitness tracker with the phone and have all the data available on the phone as well. Other than that, you can use the fitness tracker without the phone.
