Great collar for training small dog
Great Collar (and great price) for training small dogs-This is not my first experience using a dog ‘training collar’, (on a much larger 65 pound breed of dog 14 years ago) so this one did have some expectations to meet, which it did. This time I was specifically looking for a small lightweight collar for a small breed dog. I found the collar and control unit VERY well made, slick design, simple and intuitive to use. Briefly I will address some of the other reviews I read prior to buying. Obviously folks simply received ‘bad’ units and should have returned them for properly working units. Most other complaints I would judge they simply bought the wrong size/model collar for their breed of dog OR used it improperly. I agree the ‘beep’ and ‘buzz’ function are somewhat anemic, however, they do work well if not overused and employed properly. My Jack Russell-terrier-poodle mix (exceptionally active, barker, biting, chewing breed of dog) has responded so well I have NEVER found it necessary to use the static/shock function so I can’t truly swear how well this collar would work on medium or large long haired breed, but, I did TEST the shock function on my bare arm, it works great, and even the lowest setting (1) is ‘an attention getter.’ Believe me; I didn’t turn it up to maximum (9) to test if I could stand it, however, based on my past experience training with a shock collar I would be amazed if even a large breed could ignore even the lower medium settings. Like everything else, if you don’t understand how to train with the collar, you will get poor results.

well designed training collar
We've used the GoodBoy collar for about a week and we're impressed with its design and functionality. If left on for long periods of time, we can see how the collar might become an irritant, but our dog wears it for the training period only, less than two hours, once a day. We haven't used the static shock function and have no intention of doing so.Some users seem to think the collar is hard to set up, but it's hard for us to imagine any difficulty. (As with all electronics it's a good idea to read the directions first.) In any event it took one of us about 20 minutes from opening the box to having it ready to go. You'll have to charge the collar and the remote overnight before using it.The collar unit has a simple power button that requires holding down for a second or so to turn on. The remote is easy to use, and has a power-conserving, intuitive design with safety features. It cycles off after just a few seconds, but any function key turns it on again - making it much harder to use by mistake. We have the advantage of an easily-trained dog; training her to come back to us and to avoid food trash while off-leash on the beach is almost complete after a few days. We anticipate occasional reminder sessions. Even with large, energetic dogs I would recommend giving the vibrator function a try, since it's possible that over-use of the static shock function could irritate the dog's skin. For the money and the time investment this has turned out to be a bargain. We strongly recommend the product.

Seems to work well
We purchased this for our cat based on some other reviews that said it was usable for a cat. Well, our cat is 13 pounds, and it is a bit big for him, but it does work. Because of the size of the unit and the collar, I certainly would not recommend it for a smaller cat. That said, it does work. The remote is easy to set up, and the included charger is convenient to charge both the remote and the collar. I do this at night, when our cat is asleep, and the charge does last all day (about 7am to about 9pm). The undesired behavior is he at times gets too excited playing with our much smaller (2 pounds) kitten. At those times, the vibrate doesn't get his attention, but the shock setting (on 2, out of possible 9) certainly does. Already we are seeing a decrease in the undesired behavior. As someone with a good bit of background in operant conditioning, let me just pass along some advice to others, dog or cat parents. Focus on one behavior you want to extinguish at a time. Be very selective in how you use it. Our cat doesn't fear the collar because he wears is so many hours with no negative effects. He doesn't fear us because he doesn't see the connection between the shock and us. He does, however, see the connection between the shock and his attack behavior. Now he's just trying to refine how far he can go without getting the shock. So, use this carefully and very playfully, and it should work - but only on larger cats (or dogs) like ours.

Affordable and Great training collar!
I have used SportDog for years but when I lost my job and lost my training collar a couple days later I needed another for a new client. I decided to try the Goodboy because the size of the client was smaller than the Labs and Danes I had been training. The kit comes with a reflective collar that would fit a Bernese but can be trimmed to whatever size needed. The unit itself is small compared to the Sportdog and easier to turn on for me. The ability to attach the unit wherever on the collar I want means that I can also have the buckle where I want it out of the way in some cases. The remote was easy to use and took me a minute to adjust to. I prefer the side button for the beep on SportDog and the attention buttons being separated so that I don't accidentally change to shock when all I needed was vibrate. I just do what I can to make sure the shock mode is always set to 1 (it doesn't have a 0 mode or turn off ability). For those who just need a training collar or electric leash, this is a great option! Great price for such a powerful unit.I like it so much I bought one for a few friends, another for myself and recommended it for a couple clients.
