Labor with Hope: Gospel Meditations on Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Motherhood

I’m so glad I bought this book despite the seemingly negative reviews that the title was misleading (before purchasing yourself, read the provided description of the book for clarification. No one is misleading you (: ). I purchased this book while pregnant with my second as I was looking for a book that would focus my mind and heart on what the Bible says about pregnancy, labor and motherhood. This book blew me away! If you’re looking for a book with a simple list of encouraging Bible verses and a how-to step by step labor guide, this is NOT your book. If you’re looking for deep spiritual theological meditations on applying the gospel in pregnancy, labor, birth AND motherhood (like the title of the book states - and as a mom of two I can attest labor doesn’t stop after baby is born. We need Jesus every second of the day laboring as mamas), then this book is for you! I can’t recommend it enough.

I bought this book during my second pregnancy. My first pregnancy was an entire 9 months of having morning sickness, followed by a traumatic birth experience for my family and the doctors, and the first year of my son's life filled with health-related problems, as well as my physical healing after the birth. I was so excited to have another baby and a little sister for my son, but was terrified of the stress and pain that was to come. This book helped me work through previous fears, be thankful for how God built the woman's body (despite traumatic births) and look forward to my next experience with my daughter. I believe this book can reach a mother at any stage in her walk, and I would recommend it to any one, regardless of their experience as a mother.

I purchased this book during the first trimester of my third pregnancy at a time when I was dealing with more anxiety (about labor and caring for another) and morning sicknessthan my others. This book has been a huge encouragement among other things. There are so many gospel applications that I have trouble grasping them all - I feel like it's a book I could keep going back to over and over in my motherhood journey. Highly recommend.

Deeply theological and good but I was really hoping for more encouragement to use in and while going through my labor. This book is more geared towards mothers in all stages of life, which again is great, but I believe the title and description is a bit misleading. I really wanted a Christian book that would help me prepare mentally and spiritually for actual labor but this doesn't seem to be intended for that.

This was a great Gospel-centered devotional for moms! Perfect for maternity or when you're in the adoption process. I recommend reading one chapter/day, not straight through.

Absolutely epic read. Wish I would have had it for my previous pregnancies.

I’m not sure how any woman closes this book and feels encouraged for labor. It talks so much about how we are sinners and constant chapters on death and pain. While all is true, this has very little to do with giving anyone hope for labor. This is a basic devotional that should be for new believers and titled something completely different. Not for mothers seeking try “meditations on pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood.” I was so confused, I was convinced I got a misprinted book. But I see from review pictures I did not. I’m grateful this is my 3rd pregnancy and I’ve read wholesome/classic books before this. I’d never recommend this to anyone and wouldn’t even want to donate it.

Completely orients your perspective on all things labor/motherhood from yourself, toward Christ - - as it should be!
