18 inches. They have washed and worn well also.

Q: is the elastic at the top very tight? or is it loose enough for those with swollen or large ankles or calves?

The elastic isn't very tight, and doesn't leave a mark on swollen lower calves. Purchased to fit women's size 10 to accommodate feet swollen to about size 12.. These are the best non-slip socks I've found yet, after trying so many.
