can this work with smooth control? Does it leak?

Yes, it can work with smooth control, this item with anti-drip technology and constant temperature can deliver melting glue steadily and won't leak at all.

Can you use shorter or longer sticks in this? Amazon doesn't seem to sell 130mm ones at the moment.

I'm still using the 130mm that came with the gun, but bought 100mm ones to make up the order. Tho I've not used them yet I cant foresee there'll be any problem using them, or longer ones.

Do the glue sticks provided, stick wood for model ships ? and how long does it take to set.

Sticks wood very well and sets almost immediately it’s applied and starts to cool! The only thing is it’s hard to apply in a very fine line but that would only be a problem if you’re making very small scale models
