Fisher Space Pen Universal Refills. So far I've found ink in black, blue, red & purple. I found them on Amazon. :)

I do not hear a rattle. Not even if I shake it. Try unscrewing the cartridge and then putting back together.

Q: How long will the ink last in direct sunlight? I've got a map on my truck and want to trace my route. Sharpe "permanent" pens were not permanent.

As for direct sun light I cannot say being an underground coal miner... it works great after exposure to those circumstances but with the way the ink cartridge is made I believe it would be great. Have you thought of leaving maps behind and using a gps on a smartphone? They can be set to save your routes and you can trace them out on a map later... This is also not a felt pen so it won't dry out
