how much of the tip is required for temperature reading? AKA can this give me a reading at 10 inches? 5 inches etc into a pile so I can see temps?

The temperature sensitive portion is the last 2 inches at the tip of the pointed end of the probe. So you don't have to necessarily put the entire stem into the compost pile.

Is the therometer suppose to rattle? I recieved two thermometers both rattled as if something is shattered inside. Thanks.

Hmm. You should not be hearing noises with a "pro" product. The innards are all metal so it's unlikely that something "shattered". I think you are hearing the sounds of of sloppy, careless, or maybe even incompetent assembly. But I think the device will still perform.

Yes! Mine stayed out all winter doing the same. No issues at all.

When and how should the adjustable calibration screw be used?

I have several of these units and have never had to calibrate. If I need to, I'll get onto the manufacturer website.
