Great series
This has quickly become one of my favorite comics. Everybody that I’ve introduced this series to, loves it.

Even just the art
... earns a 5. Takeda has mastered linework like Druilllet's, but without the mania. Her colors tend toward the subtler tertiaries, until some primary straight from the tube demands your attention. And, in this created world, people descend from different populations, as they do in our world - by facial features, they correspond to Euro, East Asian, and African heritage. Takeda renders each face uniquely, but makes the most of each heritage's strength and distinctive beauty.Art pulls me into a story. (A weakness, I know. I ignored Dilbert for way too long.) But it's the characters and plot that keep me interested - even when the art doesn't do it for me. Even when the visuals captivate me anyway, the story and personalities still matter. That's what makes me give the top star: different people, different motivations, different levels of adult-like thinking, and different demands from different alliances along different axes of personhood. And so many levels of character: child brave beyond her years or abilities, skulking victim of extortion, heroin in all the ways that matter, and lots more. Really, it's how the characters interact that brings this to life, with so many personalities looking for such different outcomes. That sets this comic apart.-- wiredweird

The artwork and story continue to impress like few others
I have trouble finding monthly issues of much of anything in my area, and frankly, I prefer something with better binding that combines issues. I’m not a collector, I buy these to read the story and enjoy the art work. I prefer to have something out on a shelf, whenever I want to read it again or share it.I found this series from reading comments about other series that I liked, and I am SO excited every time I get a new volume. The artwork is fantastic, and the story is well-developed, dark, and complex. I love that it combines body horror and dark humor with such a fantastic backdrop of society. I often find myself wanting whole stories devoted to just explaining the backstory, but I don’t want to detract from the main story in any way. I can’t wait to see where this goes next.

Excellent progressing story, fantastic art direction and creation!
When I first picked up Monstress, I didn't expect to like it right off the bat, but after about 3 to 4 pages of reading it, I started getting super intrigued. Volume 3 doesn't disappoint and adds more political strife and information to the world that readers may of felt was missing from Volume 1 or Volume 2, but it's purposely done like this to really lay out the world and it's history at your feet and then from there, for you to run with it. It also adds more for Maika and her 'monster' where you thought the story couldn't get any deeper; it does. The artwork is excellent, and I wish more comics would produce this kind of work on a regular basis. Looking forward to collecting the fourth volume! If you like fantasy, dark, horror, or mystery stories with some unique artwork, this is for you. I do not recommend reading though if you are under 18 years of age, there is nudity, gore, and a lot of it just kind of happens, there's not much forewarning and the story isn't geared to a younger audience.

A sweeping work of high fantasy meets cosmic horror and easily one of the most beautiful comics ever
Monstress is a sweeping work of high fantasy meets cosmic horror and easily one of the most beautiful comics ever. Period. Each page is dazzling. And as for the story… I don’t know where to start. It’s a vast and complex fantasy epic set in a matriarchal world of jaw-droppingly beautiful Art Deco-esque steampunk featuring lots of strong queer characters and themes. It’s a story of war and the trauma it inflicts upon individuals and society alike. It’s a story of Lovecraftian monsters worshipped as gods and the awesome power born of the connection between a teenage girl who’s known nothing but war and one of those ancient and indescribably powerful creatures. It’s a love story, a coming-of-age in impossible times story. Also, there’s a race of cat mages with multiple tails. Also also, as someone who grew up unable to find their name on those racks of mini license plates, sticker packs, or even stupid soda cans, finding an awesome comic wherein the main character bears my name is so delightful it’s sometimes distracting.

Cryptic but the art is stunning and the world-building is clearly unfolding
Marjorie M. Liu is clearly developing a mythology and backstory here, and clearly has it fleshed out like a Hemmingway-inspired iceberg, but often, enough of the peak really isn't showing through for things to not seem unnecessarily cryptic. Maika's development is clearer here as is the god-being within her, but much the plot still seems to wait for threads to connect to fully clarify them. The various factions keep getting more and more byzantine, but Kippa and the cats' plotlines do give readers something more human-seeming to attach to. Takeda's art and character design remains stunning.

Loved it!
It did not disappoint! The story just gets more amazing, complex and intriguing. I cannot wait until volume 4 is out. I do agree with another reviewer in that it would be helpful to have a guide of the characters. I intend to read them all l again in the future, but until I take the time to do that and while all the other volumes come out every 9 months, many details do get lost in memory. Nonetheless, amazing work! Thank you for this. Really, thank you!

Monstress can't miss
The story keeps getting better, and Sana Takeda's art is just mesmerizing. 'Monstress' is, without a doubt, one of the best comics out there. Must read if you're into them.

I like the drawings
I enjoyed the story in the first volume enormously, everything looked so interesting, the world so well thought. Now, on the third volume, new characters, new places are introduced and I realized this will be a long journey. The main story will not end until lots of lateral things will happen. The good thing is that the atmosphere is good and the drawings are exceptional so anything will happen I will still read it. It is a little frustrating that this will be milked to the last penny and will stop probably when it will lose momentum, maybe without being finished (I am afraid this is the Game of Thrones paranoia syndrome on my part).
