Summoner

Mostly boiler plate.
Summoner is a book. It's a harem book that creates the typical slightly "fish out of water" male character, but gives him some great and unusual ability so that women have an excuse for being abnormally attracted to him. Then it takes him and puts him in situations where he can seem to be heroic.the problem is that, Summoner isn't anything more than that. The writing is adequate, but not really stirring. The characters seem to be taken out of a "tropes-r-us" bag rather than carefully crafted to be clearly different from each other and from the standards you might find in this genre. In all, while its not bad, there is absolutely nothing to really recommend or to make it seem special. It's good for a single read in an afternoon, but that's about it. 3 stars.

Very good book, the series has potential. 3,5 stars
It’s a great book. The magic system and the use of the summoned monster are fairly original, and it works very well within the story. The plot is a straight forward rehash of various very familiar tropes and clichés: the orphan farm boy with hidden magic, an OP character because he uses his powers in a unique way, the magic school setting, the high-class/low-class conflict, the tsundere high-class girl, and so on. But it’s fair to say that the author combined those things into a good story anyway. The MC is relatable and likable, he is very mature, know his place and what other think of him, and made rational and thorough decisions almost all the time. That’s not very common in this kind of books, so I enjoyed this MC very much. The supporting characters are likable, although I was having trouble keeping up with all the students and teachers, mainly because sometimes they are referred by name and sometimes by surname.I really don’t know what the author means by "This novel has harem elements" statement in the blurb. This book has a guy having sex with three different women, nothing more. One is a casual thing at the beginning of the book and is not mentioned again; with the other two you can say that they are friends with benefits, but not a single harem-y thing (nor romantic in that regard) happens in this book. Maybe the next books will develop a harem, but nothing points that way with this book. They come out as a liberal people, who have sex when they want with who they want. The story round up nicely (although a bit fast) but it obviously leaves room for the next installment.

It's okay
The cover and all the reviews fooled me. When I saw the cover and the summary saying "slight harem "elements I thought "WOW, this is going to be hot!". The 200+ reviews made me think "That's a lot of reviews for an amazon author! This must be fantastic!" It's not that type of book though-for all the description of how hot or cute a lady is in this novel it totally skips over the parts that matter. Why even mention how hot they are ALL OF THE TIME if your not going to do anything with it?? It's like all those ecchi manga you try to avoid because it's all a big tease. The dialogue is good at parts but the MC's slang throws me off because I'm just not used to it. The dialogue is kind of like an anime, the MC says something that's not really profound but the ladies just eat it up like he's a Casanova. The MC excelling in almost everything he does (except for things that don't matter) made me roll my eyes. How could someone who does construction be so perfect? Some of the reasons why he's so good is baffling*slight spoiler that demonstrates what I'm talking about*"I offered a smirk. "It's called bar fighting, Lady Kenefick, and it's much more applicable to the real world than your uptight boxing." ...Wut. In what universe would a trained boxer struggle and lose to a person who has only been in bar fights. A person with no real training would have a high chance of losing against a competent boxer. Hell, the way the MC thinks when he fights would suggest HE is the highly trained one. Everything just seems so...easy for the MC. It's boring.Overall, the fighting is written well and the world introduced is an interesting concept. I decided to give it four stars instead of three stars because I went in with ulterior motives (smut-I know i'm a perv lol) which is making me judge this extremely hard. I hope this helps potential buyers.

Not to my taste.
This is the “story” of a teenager on hormones. Nothing more. I realize that some people might like hollow main character with little to no story. I don’t.

Two books, Two Stars
I read both books in the series, i had issues with the first one but I've been devouring books for the last week so i bit the bullet and got book 2 to see if things were going in the right direction. Nope.I'll do my best to avoid spoilers but there may be a couple light ones, nothing big about the story though (which is part of the problem)First is the characters, they are kinda meh. I've seen worse, i will say some of them do have potential though i dont see the author dragging it out of them. Gryff himself is boring, your typical male Mary Sue. Things come easy, people like him, good looking smart, etc etc.The author writes in the description about harem elements and that the women break down his door. There are some sexual related scenes in the book that dont really add anything and could easily be removed. The women in this universe seem to be pretty open about sex and relationships but that is never gone into at all.Which is a problem with the series so far as a whole. The magic is obviously a central part of the story with what ytou can do mattering to people, but it isnt until the last quarter of book 2 when you get some info on how people get which magic. Though even that is far from enough to flesh it out.The biggest issue though, and it incorporates a lot aspects in the series, is that there is no direction. 2 books in and there is no goal. There is no big enemy or disaster, no trials or tribulations. Gryff just goes through his days one step at a time, the series has no direction or goal, and without that what am i reading for?

Write another, then proof read for errors.
As far as fantasy books go, this isn't exactly ground breaking, far from it in fact. That aside, the charm it offers instead more than compensates, having read Dungeon master first, then this, it's reasonable to say I'm a fan of this type of thing having finished it in the space of a day...Small aside, proof read, proof read, proof read - it isn't spelling mistakes, it's just the wrong word..!Past vs passed, knock vs nock.

Novel take on summoning magic
I really enjoyed the magic concepts that underpin the story. I liked the main character and the narrative moved along at a good pace. I also enjoyed spotting the hooks for further story development. Can't wait for the sequel!

Excellent
Not my normal type of book but really glad I tried it, very happy that I now have a new series to get through, such a hardship. Thank you Mr Vall, another entertaining book that I strongly recommend. Will be downloading the next one in less than a minute
