I like it.
My usual coffee wasn’t unavailable when making my purchase so I decided to try this which I hadn’t seen before. I’m pretty happy I did as it tastes very good!

On the darker side of "Medium Roast"
Item: Ferraris Coffee | Italian Style | Medium Roast | Strength 4/5Current price: £18.00 (1kg)We usually have our coffee beans delivered through a subscription service and would typically expect to know what beans have been used as well as their origin, and also the date they were roasted in addition to the best before date. This pack doesn’t list the information on the type of beans or the date of roasting, which would have been nice to know as it helps us to prioritise which coffee to use up first to ensure it all stays fresh. As I use an Aeropress to make my coffee, I can’t judge the freshness by the release of CO2 from the beans, but judging by the smell and taste upon opening (and with 8 months remaining before the ‘best before’ date) the bag I received was in good condition. The bag has no way to re-seal it after opening, so it may be aimed more at a large bean-to-cup machine rather than for smaller set-ups like mine, but the packaging is lightweight enough to be able to be sealed again using a food clip.I have my hand grinder set up for medium roasted beans and, although these beans are roasted to the darker end of Medium, they ground easily. The coffee is strong and ever so slightly bitter with a good flavour and aroma. I typically use 17g of beans and 120ml water with the remainder being milk, but with these beans have adjusted that slightly down to 16.5g as the darker roast means the beans are lighter in weight. With the size of the bag I have decanted half into an air tight container and frozen them, as I am unlikely to finish the bag within the recommended 4 weeks after opening, and it would be a shame to let such nice coffee go stale. The coffee these beans produce is rich, flavourful and certainly perks me up mid-morning.

Columbian Beans - But roasted when?
First of the negatives…Nothing on the pack about the origin or bean variety other than “100% coffee from more than one origin”. Nothing to state whether this is 100% Arabica or blended with Robusta. It has a fairly decent caffeine punch to it, so my personal guess would be this has cheaper Robusta beans in the blend.Another thing I don’t like is the lack of a roast date. On what is marketed and priced as a fairly premium coffee I think they should be transparent about the roast date. An expiry date means next to nothing about how fresh it is.On a more positive note…18G dose extracted with a naked portafilter produced a lovely thick crema with a strong nutty aroma. Taste is very much Italian, low acidity, nutty and a hint of dark cocoa. Holds up well in milk based drinks.Overall a decent coffee, I debated with scoring this at 3 stars, 1 star off for each of my negative points, but that felt a bit harsh. 4 stars seem fair, with just a star deducted for the lack of a roasted date.

Deliciously smooth coffee
As soon as I opened the packet I was greeted with the most delicious smell of fresh coffee - the best smell in the world.I got out my trusty 45 year old French coffee grinder from the back of the cupboard, as recently I have been buying pre-ground coffee, and ground my first batch. The first cup of coffee I tried in my cafetiere was not that strong. I then found a very handy French Press brewer's guide on the Ferraris website, and realised that I had been making a few mistakes. I had ground the beans too finely, and had also not used enough grounds to the amount of water I was using (it should be 30g of coffee to 500ml of water). So, armed with my digital scales, I followed their instructions to the letter, and ended up with the most delicious strong cup of coffee. Now I know where I have been going wrong! My mother and I only drink one cup of coffee a day each, always fresh after dinner, and we therefore do enjoy a really good one, and this is it for both of us. She tends to like it a bit stronger than I do, but this medium roast 4/5 strength was good for both of us. She has it black, whereas I like it with a little double cream in it.The bag of beans is huge, and at first I was a bit dismayed to learn that you should use the kilo of beans within 4 weeks of opening, but actually when we use 30g a day, this will be fine. I am grinding enough beans for 2 or 3 days at a time and storing the grounds in an airtight jar. I have also tightly fastened the open bag of beans to ensure the lovely freshness doesn't escape. A beautiful roast, and I really enjoyed reading about the Ferraris history on their website.

Fantastic
A fantastic bag of coffee! We use our beans in the coffee machine which grinds them for you, this is sometimes a drawback with other beans as the grind doesn't compliment or showcase the bean. This is completely different. From the moment you open the bag with the delicious smells to the taste, one great bag of beans, would buy again.

Delicious!
This coffee is lovely, it's perfectly roasted and not oily at all, tastes very much like coffee and isn't bitter, can't complain at all!
