From Barbara O'Connor, the author of the #1 New York Times -bestseller Wish , comes a big-hearted story about the meaning of friendship, the joys and pains of growing up, and one lovable runaway dog. Perfect for fans of Katherine Applegate and Kate DiCamillo. Mavis Jeeter is fearless and bold, but she has never lived in one place long enough to have a real best friend. Her flighty mother has uprooted them again to another new home and taken a job as a housekeeper for the Tully family. Mavis wants this home to be permanent―which means finding herself a best friend. Rose Tully is a worrier who feels like she doesn’t quite fit in with the other girls in her neighborhood. Her closest friend is Mr. Duffy, but he hasn’t been himself since his dog died. Rose may have to break a few of her mother’s many rules to help Mr. Duffy―and find someone who really understands her. Henry has run away from home, but he craves kindness and comfort―and doesn’t know where to look for them. When Mavis and Rose hatch a scheme to find Mr. Duffy a new dog, their lives and Henry’s intersect―and they all come to find friendship in places they never expected. Don't miss Barbara O'Connor's other heartwarming middle-grade titles: Wish How to Steal a Dog Greetings from Nowhere Beethoven in Paradise Fame and Glory in Freedom, Georgia The Fantastic Secret of Owen Jester The Small Adventure of Popeye and Elvis On the Road to Mr. Mineo's Halfway to Harmony Dream Review: Good for 11 yo - Bought these for my 11 yo daughter. She loved it and read all 3 in the series. She described the story as engaging, emotional and interesting. Review: Great for kids 8-10 - This is a fun little novel that is great for kids I would say ages 8-10. Our 8 year old loved reading this book together. Great story line and full of real life struggles, emotions, and how best friends are made. Highly recommend this book!

Sweet, insightful book for readers at all levels
Wish by Barabara O'Connor was one of my favorite reads last year, and so I was very excited for her new novel. It did not disappoint. I loved the chapters written from Henry the dog's point of view. I loved the difference between the two main characters, Mavis and Rose, and how the story was told through both of their perspectives. This is a sweet story about unlikely friendships, finding the courage to stand up for yourself, and what it means to be a friend. As a reading intervention teacher, I love that this story is written simply enough for all of my readers to enjoy, but yet touches on deep, complex human issues. This story can reach readers of all abilities and ages- perfect for any library shelf. #LitReviewCrew

A lengthy read
I like the book but it’s a bit difficult for a seven year old to stay abreast of all the characters. It’s three main characters, plus their parents, other friends, and a dog. My granddaughter needed help keeping up.

Fun Summer Adventure Novel
Mavis is always moving houses, towns, & schools following her mother's next “big” job. It’s not until Mavis lands in Magnolia Estates that she is determined to finally have a permanent home with a real best friend. Mavis is loud, fun, & spontaneous and when she meets Her soon to be best friend she realizes she is completely the opposite. Rose is timid and mild mannered and her best friend is the neighborhood gate keeper, Mr. Duffy. Mr. Duffy hasn’t been himself ever since his dog passed away, so Mavis and Rose set out to cheer Mr. Duffy up. This was the first Barbara O'Connor book I’ve read and I really enjoyed it! Wish has been on my TBR forever, but it got bypassed when I picked this up for @booksamillion Kids Bookclub. This is such a simple but fierce book about friendship & I would highly suggest this to any kid.

Making Friends
Something I’ve noticed about favorite writers is that I think they’re writing about me. Maybe not today’s me, or even yesterday’s me, but me someday. That’s what Barbara O’Connor does in Wonderland: The Novel. I found myself in all her main characters (yes, even the dog’s.) Poor little rich girl Rose is in need of a friend. Gypsy girl Mavis, whose mom just can’t find the right job, or man, or life, is never in a place long enough for her to make a friend. There’s Mr Duffy, who is not only mourning his wife but also his dog, and the runway greyhound Henry who only wants a true home. That’s all you need to know. If you’re like me, you won’t put the book down until you find out what happens to these star crossed friends.

Great read for kids 8-11 (or older)
My daughter (9) absolutely loved the book. She powered through it in just a few days. She's already looking forward to the next book by the same author.
