Love the series am enjoying the books

These books are great to read if you love romance, history, sci-fi. Begins in 1946 just after WW2 ends with Claire & Frank, husband & wife. They've been separated for 5 yrs, so they go on a 2nd honeymoon from London up to Inverness, Scotland. There is a set of "standing stones" (think Stonehenge) nearby. Claire goes there and "falls through" the stones when she touches one. Ends up in 1743. She ends up in the hands of Scottish Highlanders who protect her but also use her nursing skills. She wants to get back to Frank. But how? That's the beginning of the first book, "Outlander." By book 2, she's still in the 18th century, married to a highlander, and they have escaped to France. A lot of interesting things using the real names of people from that time period, using real historical times/places/events. It is a fascinating story through all NINE books ("Go Tell the Bees that I am Gone" came out in late 2021). Book TEN is currently being written.If you do not know, this storyline has been made into a big TV show. You can find it by getting a subscription to Starz or Netflix (Netflix does not have the most recent 6th season of the show from 2022). Six seasons so far, and #7 is coming out this summer.

Very big fan

There are several covers to these books. I started reading the first book (Outlander) that I picked up at a half priced book store. However, the book was "small"-ish. It didn't want to stay open in my hands. The font was too small to read comfortably without my reading glasses. Add to that, I didn't love the cover art with the actors on it - no offense intended, I just like clean book covers. After reading half-way through the first novel with this used copy, I decided that I was "all in", and looked to see what a set would cost. This full set is highly economical compared to purchasing each book one at a time. The covers have a flow to them so that it looks like a set rather than an eclectic hodge-lodge of acquired books. Usually, that doesn't bother me, but I have a suspicion that these are going to become a treasure on my shelf. The covers shown here are pretty true to form - intense blues, greens, and reds. The pages are a brighter white than the smaller book.NOTE: What is really interesting, is that I took a picture of what I thought was the same passage - and there are differences in the passage. "Lunch" vs "Dinner", "Supper vs Dinner". "Lowlands vs Border". So apparently, it's more than a face uplift here - this is a full on edition difference. I don't even know which one is closer to the original, or if my version has a different editor altogether.Pros:- Whiter pages- Larger font, but not too much larger.- Easy to hold open- Vibrant colorsCons:- Edition change? I'd like to know which was better.

The story is amazing, of course. I docked a star for the quality of the physical books, themselves. The paper is thin, and the ink seems perpetually wet, it smudges and smears easily. They seem cheaper than what they're charging for them. But! One of them got heavily water damaged because of a leak, and I got it dried out (put half sheets of paper between the wet pages carefully and let it dry, I think I blow dried it carefully too), and it didn't actually *run* and I was able to finish despite the newly dried pages being yellowed and crinkled... So worry not about water damage, although your hands will be covered in ink. If ever a case for flip and wash lol. It's also impossible to read without creasing the spines. I tried. I failed. You get just so far and it does it anyway. They also came to me slightly damaged even though I got new. But even for these cheap copies, at least the story is there to be read! If nothing else it allows those of us unable to afford $200 for the nice hardcover copies to read it. So worth the few issues. Those of you looking for a story review, it's amazing. Time travel, period piece (1700's!), Scotland!!! It's one of the few rare stories that doesn't instantly make me go into editor mode (my being a writer, myself...), and I can actually enjoy the story. Only a few issues grammatically, easy enough to move on, although some I have to cover with my finger to avoid editor mode turning on... But if you're just a reader and not a writer that shouldn't be an issue! The story is great, deep, the characters are relatable... Some things feel questionable but also our modern brains might think "this phrase is bad!" But it's a period piece! It's relative, it wouldn't be realistic I think, for them to use modern phrasing for some things, and there was no alternative back then. (I'm more talking about how they—specifically Claire—say Chinaman instead of Chinese man in one book... It bugs me a lot, I finished that book over a year ago and it's still bothering me, but I don't think they would have thought twice back in that time...) For those coming off the show wanting to skip ahead (like I did), the books and the show are quite different in quite a few places, though you'll see where it was kept the same easily. Imo the books are better (aren't they always?), so if you can afford it, get them! Some stuff is better in the show, and it's certainly nice to see and hear and experience the characters, and the places. But there's more info and more depth to everything with the written story. This series got me to actually look more in depth into my own Scottish ancestry, and it feels a lot like home. Definitely recommend this story. It's also one of the rarities that is mostly in first person. It's in past-tense though, but that doesn't *normally* detract any from the story. (Speaking as a first person present-tense writer.)
